Edison Update 10-28-2016
Good afternoon Edison Families!
Everyone is super excited for our first Family party of the school year! Tomorrow is the day and, if you are helping, set up begins at 2:00. The parties will start at 2:15 and end at 2:55. It will be short but sweet! Please make sure you have touched base with your child's family teacher and/or party parent to see how you can contribute (if you haven't already).
We had a fun day today in the Edison area with the beginning of our two day, "Pumpkinology." Ask your child what special things we did today!
The time has come for the Edisons to take their second SRI test of the year. We will take it next Wednesday morning and can't wait to see growth in every Edison. Please ensure that your child is well-fed and is at school on time. Thanks!
Mayo has a wonderful Thanksgiving tradition. We love for parents to join us for a Thanksgiving lunch the Tuesday before Thanksgiving (November 22nd). The entire school spends the morning in a "Community Day." We participate in activities with our Mayo family related to being thankful. To make lunch run smoothly, we must have an RSVP and payment returned for anyone who will be joining us. Please find that form attached. Also attached is the lunch invitation with the time that your child's family will eat lunch. We will also take family pictures that day, as well as retakes for individual pictures (in uniform).
Some of our field study dates have changed and we want to make sure you are aware of the new dates. On Thursday, December 1st, we will be going to the Will Rogers Museum in Claremore. Then, on Tuesday, December 20th, we will go downtown to the Woody Guthrie Center and the new Central Library. Please mark your calendars and let us know if you can join us!
It's almost jog-a-thon time at Mayo! Miles for Mayo, on Friday, November 4, is the Mayo Foundation's biggest fund raiser. This year's theme is "Supporting Our Superheroes!" All funds raised will be used to pay for professional development and supplies for the Mayo teaching staff. Keep collecting pledges and donations! Our goal is 100% participation in the Edison area!

October 28 - Fall Carnival

Armstrong Update October 12, 2016
Greetings Armstrong Parents!
We are already almost through one fourth of the school year, where did the time go? With only two days of school next week, we have fall break coming up next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We will resume school on Monday Oct. 24th. We hope that you are able to take this time to relax and enjoy the time with your families.
School pictures and Jog-a-thon envelopes were sent home with your child today.
Student-Led Conferences – Fall conferences are scheduled for next Monday (10/17) and Tuesday (10/18). Conferences will begin at 3:30 p.m. and will end at 6:30 p.m. Our conferences are student led. You do not need to schedule a time, just show up! Please sign in at the top of the Armstrong stairs and grab a conference menu for your child to lead you through their classes. Don’t forget to bring your Armstrong as they will lead you through what they have learned!
JOG-A-THON! – It's jog-a-thon time at Mayo! Miles for Mayo, on Friday, November 4, is the Mayo Foundation's biggest fund raiser. This year's theme is "Supporting Our Superheroes!" All funds raised will be used to pay for professional development and supplies for the Mayo teaching staff. Your child should have come home today with a pledge envelope. Look inside of the envelope for a flyer with details about this fun event and start collecting pledges and donations now!
*Armstrong Overnight (from last week’s newsletter) – Previously this year we had mentioned having our yearly Armstrong Overnight in November on the night of the election. While we realize that this is a Mayo tradition, we are concerned about the volatile nature of this particular election and election season and we believe it is best to not hold our overnight on election night this year. We have been studying different systems of government in Social Studies and will be continuing to delve deeper into the United States system of government and how our Electoral College and system of voting works. We also plan on having special classes on the day of the election focusing on different presidential/election related topics including a mini-research project about former presidents. Our overnight has been postponed until the Spring, more details to follow in a few weeks.
Crystal Bridges Field Study – Don’t forget! The Armstrongs will be going to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas on Monday October 24th. Since Bentonville is approximately 2 hours by bus from Tulsa, is it imperative that we leave Mayo no later than 8AM. We are aiming to be back to Mayo by 3:00 that day, however; if your child is a bus rider there is a possibility that we may not make it in time for the buses (depending on traffic, weather conditions, etc.).
Literacy Update – Parents, 4th grade will be studying knights and castles after fall break for literacy. We will be constructing model castles during centers. Thusly, any shoeboxes or paper towels rolls would be appreciated. Please bring them to Mr. Najera. Thanks!
Important Reminders
- We still have students who are bringing cell phones to school and keeping them in their lockers. If it is necessary for your child to bring a cell phone to school, it is policy for the phones to be kept in the office with Mrs. Jennings during school hours. Otherwise, we ask that you please keep student cell phones at home.

- Fall Candy Grams! – We need parents and their 5th grader to sell candy grams before and after school and during the parent conference. Contact Nicole Reeder if you are available to help with Candy Grams nreeder@lwsl-law.com
- We ask that each 5th grader bring at least one bag of candy to donate for the Fall Carnival and Candy Grams. You can drop these off in Mrs. Smith’s area.
- If you have not picked up your box of World’s Finest Chocolate, please contact Nicole Reeder to get a box nreeder@lwsl-law.com. She cannot hand these out to students without parents signing a consent form first.
- If you still have coins that were not turned in for the Coin Drive last Thursday, please bring those to Mrs. Smith to be picked up.

Getting Messy and Having Fun with What Bugs You
We had some really great visitors this week! On Tuesday, the OSU Master Gardeners came out and did a presentation with our students called “Spiders and Insects: Friend or Foe?” They learned facts about spiders and insects in the presentation. They also made a Spider Hat, sorted facts and opinions about spiders, played Pollinator Tag, made a dirt cup snack with pudding and Oreos (complete with gummy worm), and played Bug-Go (like Bingo). It was a fun and educational day!

Wednesday and Thursday, Robert Lewis (who you may remember as the storyteller from last year’s overnight!) came out and taught our students about clay. He also guided them through the building/designing of a clay “pinch pot”. Students will be decorating these before bringing them home after Student-Led Conferences.
A BIG THANK YOU!
Tomorrow is Ms. Tandy’s official last day at Mayo. The Goodall teachers and students have enjoyed her stay and appreciated all her hard work and assistance. If you see her tomorrow, please tell her thank you and let her know you wish her well on her journey to become a classroom teacher!! I’m sure she’d also appreciate hugs and handshakes from students.

*******STUDENT LED CONFERENCES are next Monday and Tuesday, the 17th and 18th from 3:30 until 6:30.********* We are striving for 100% participation and plan to see you one of those nights. Your child will be in charge of showing you what they’ve been learning, and teachers can answer any questions you may have. This is a wonderful time to watch your child shine and show their pride.
Your child should have come home today with a pledge envelope. Look inside of the envelope for a flyer with details about this fun event and start collecting pledges and donations now!
Your child also should have brought home an Envision Math workbook today. We will not be using this at school and thought some of you might want to use it at home for additional math practice. We do not need anything returned, it is for you to use as you see fit.
Tulsa Public Schools is out for Fall Break next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday the 19th, 20th and 21st. We hope you are able to enjoy this time with your family and we’ll see you back at school on the 24th.
Thank You!
