Armstrong Update 10-6-2016

Greetings Armstrong Parents!

Happy 3-day Weekend! Don’t forget that we do not have school tomorrow due to district-wide professional development (in lieu of the early release Fridays from previous years).

Previously this year we had mentioned having our yearly Armstrong Overnight in November on the night of the election.  While we realize that this is a Mayo tradition, we are concerned about the volatile nature of this particular election and election season and we believe it is best to not hold our overnight on election night this year. We have been studying different systems of government in Social Studies and will be continuing to delve deeper into the United States system of government and how our electoral college and system of voting works. We also plan on having special classes on the day of the election focusing on different presidential/election related topics including a mini-research project about former presidents. Our overnight has been postponed until the Spring, more details to follow in a few weeks.

Crystal Bridges Field Study – The Armstrongs will be going to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas on Monday October 24th. We realize that this is the Monday after Fall Break, but we thought it would be a great way to kick start the second quarter! We will be doing the guided tour “Perseverance” from 10AM-11AM. Since Bentonville is approximately 2 hours by bus from Tulsa, is it imperative that we leave Mayo no later than 8AM. We are aiming to be back to Mayo by 3:00 that day, however; if your child is a bus rider there is a possibility that we may not make it in time for the buses (depending on traffic, weather conditions, etc.). You may want to make other arrangements for pick-up this day if possible. This is an amazing opportunity provided by the museum at no cost to Mayo because of a generous scholarship program for public schools.

If you are interested in joining us, please email your child’s homebase teacher or Mrs. Smith ASAP. We will only have a limited number of seats on the bus for parents but you are welcome to drive your own car.

Literacy Update – Parents, 4th grade will be studying knights and castles after fall break for literacy. We will be constructing model castles during centers. Thusly, any shoeboxes or paper towels rolls would be appreciated. Please bring them to Mr. Najera. Thanks!

Math Update – All Armstrong students were sent home with a letter pertaining to student login information for www.prodigygame.com. This is a math review program that allows students to practice their math skills at home as well as at school during their center rotations.
We do have 4th and 5th grade math practice workbooks available to send home if you would like your child to have extra practice. Several students received some today and more will be sent home on Monday.

Armstrong Typing Update – There have been several times when students have been caught on youtube and other websites that are not the assigned typing practice website that they are to be using during that class time.

Science Update – In the coming two weeks we will study mold and which conditions are best suited to mold growth. As an extension of this lesson we would like to show your students that not all molds are “bad.” To facilitate this we would like to have a day where students study and record their experiences sampling certain cheeses and bread. We will most likely use pumpernickel and blue cheese. If your student has a mold allergy please let Mr. Najera or Mr. Guss know so we can accommodate them.

Important Reminders
- Armstrong after school dismissal/pick-up is on the playground at the newly painted map of the United States. Please make sure to sign your child out with their homebase teacher (Mrs. Smith’s homebase will be with Mrs. Lyles). If there is inclement weather, the Armstrongs will wait for pick-up in their area upstairs. We appreciate your patience and flexibility with the new dismissal procedures.

- Cell phones are not allowed in the Armstrong Area. While we understand the need for your child to have a cell phone with them for contact with after school activities, we require all cell phones to be checked in with Mrs. Jennings in the mornings before class. She will keep them safe during the day so they will not become a distraction. Please remind your child(ren) of this policy if they carry a cell phone to school with them. Thank you for your cooperation!

- According to the school dress code: “The only outerwear allowed inside the classroom will be a navy cardigan (with a Mayo patch) or a Mayo fleece jacket.  These may be purchased from C&J Uniforms or K. Renee Uniform Closet.  The fleece jackets may be purchased from the Mayo PTA Spirt Store.” – Please remind your child of this, we have been having to enforce this on a daily basis.

FIFTH GRADE:
- Thoreau Demonstration will be coming to visit and talk with our 5th graders on Monday October, 10th at 8AM. This is something that will not interfere with any class time. If you would like to join us for this preview, you are more than welcome.
- The ticket mania and Raffle ticket fundraiser the kids earned $1247.00 and received $80 in donations with some more donations to come!!
