Edison Update 5-25-2017

Good morning!  Hope your summer is off to a great start!  We wanted to say how much we enjoyed getting to know your child(ren) this year and how proud we are of their academic and social growth.

Although we know you have lots of fun things planned that do not involve school this summer, please continue to promote reading every day!  The Tulsa City County Library’s Summer Reading Program begins Tuesday, May 30th.  We encourage every family to participate!  Here is a link for more information: http://guides.tulsalibrary.org/csrp2017

I also created some new assignments on the math website that we used this year called Prodigy.  Your student should know how to access their account and it is a free resource.

This will be the last correspondence you will receive from the Edison area.  I have shared your emails with your student’s new teachers and they will be contacting you later this summer.  It was a great year and we truly enjoyed getting to know you and your students.

Happy summer!

Edison Update 5-4-2017

Dear Edison parents,

We are so proud of how much effort your children put towards the SRI reading test on Wednesday. We hope they are proud of themselves too. Just a reminder that we have to take the MAP reading test tomorrow and then the MAP math test on Friday, the 12th. THEN, we are finished with 3rd grade testing.

Tuesday the 9th, the teachers are planning a special lunch for your child, so please do NOT send a lunch!

Our last field study will be next Thursday, the 11th. We are going to the Tulsa Historical Society to learn about the Osage Tribe who settled in Pawhuska, then, weather permitting, we will spend some time at Woodard Park.

We hope to see those of you who have had the opportunity to volunteer at our Volunteer Breakfast on Friday, the 12th. It will be in the library from 7:15 till 8:00. After that, stay and attend the Lifeskill awards celebration in the gym. Each student will be honored for the lifeskill they most consistently use.

Thank you!
The Edison Team

P.S. Come early to school tomorrow and get breakfast from the taco truck!!

Edison Update 4-24-2017

Hello Edison families,

We hope you and your child are rested from the overnight!  Thank you parents for contributing to the success of the overnight by helping when asked (or when seeing a need) and being engaged with your child.  We want these trips to be learning experiences for students, parents, and teachers.  Special thanks to those who stayed with the group and followed the outlined expectations.  When we travel, we do so as a school group and represent Mayo. We want to be good guests and leave a good impression so that we may return in the future.  Thank you if you contributed positively.

The Edison Program is this Thursday, April 27th.  YOUR STUDENT NEEDS TO WEAR THEIR EDISON GREY SHIRT AND JEANS TO SCHOOL AND THAT EVENING.  The students need to meet in the Edison area at 6:00p.m.  You may stroll to find a seat in the Wilson Cafetorium after sending your Edison upstairs.  We ask that you and your family bring a blanket to sit on to watch the program.  This allows the majority of the audience to see the students.  If you or other guests need to sit in a chair, we will have some available along the back of the room.  EVERY student has a part in the program.  If your child will not be able to be here Thursday evening, please respond to this email and let us know ASAP.

Here are some important dates for your calendar:

April 27          Edison Program @ 6:30 (be here at 6:00)

Edison Update 4-13-2017

Good afternoon Edison families!

Your students persevered through testing and we could not be more proud!  We know you are anxious to know how they did, but unfortunately preliminary results for them won’t be available until JULY!  As you know, this is the test that determines whether some students are ready to progress to 4th grade.  We have maintained academic records on ALL Edisons and have been in touch with those of you who have children on an Academic Progress Plan and are in question of promoting.  We will be in contact with those families soon to set up a meeting and decide together what is best for the child.

Tomorrow your child will bring home a large garbage sack to use for their sleeping bag and pillow for the overnight next week.  Please DO NOT SEND THESE BACK TO SCHOOL, but BRING THEM WITH YOU NEXT THURSDAY MORNING.  Remember that if you are going on the trip with us, keep your child’s sack and backpack with you.  We will need the space under the bus for those students who don’t have an adult coming.  We also thought of one more item that parents might want to bring: a folding chair.  This would come in handy at the recreation center while we are eating.  Last week your child brought home a packing list and a detailed itinerary for the trip, as well as committee information for those adults attending.  Also, many students brought home a Volunteer Application and Security Check form early this week that must be returned to the office by Friday so that you can attend the overnight!  Some parents already had this information on file, but many did not.  Please ask your child if they received a paper.

If anyone is interested in applying to Mayo for a KG-5th grade spot the application window is Monday 4/10/17 – Friday 4/28/17.  Parents will need to fill out a “paper” application at the Enrollment Center during the application window.  The application is called “Neighborhood School Transfers”.  Parents who wish to apply and have their child’s name placed on a waiting list for the 2017-18 school year must attend one of the tours listed below.  Tours are for adults only and a reservation must be made in advance.

Tuesday 4/18 9:00AM
Wednesday 4/26 6:30PM

Please note the date for the Edison Program is Thursday, April 27th.  The students will need to be here that evening at 6:00 in their gray Edison t-shirt.

Other important dates:

April 20/21 – Edison overnight
April 27 – Edison Program
April 24th-April 28th is the last week for checking out books.
May 1st-5th   BOGO Book Fair
May 5th          ALL Library Books are Due
May 11 – Field Study to Tulsa Historical Society

Thanks for staying updated by reading these emails!

Edison Update 4-7-2017

Hello everyone!

Whew! The first week of testing is complete. Every Edison has completed the English Language Arts portion of the OCCT. Please let your student know how proud you are of them. They worked so hard and they all took their time. Also, THANK YOU for sending your student to school well rested and on time, we really appreciate it. We will take the math portion of the OCCT this Tuesday and Wednesday. Again, please have your student to school on time.

Also, a huge shout out to all the Edison families that attended Family Math Night. We had such a great time sharing our math ideas with you all.

We are just 2 weeks away from our Edison Overnight!!  Attached you will find the packing list, itinerary, and specific details regarding the trip.  If an adult will be attending, your child will bring home the committee you will be serving on and the responsibilities of those on the committee today.  We only put you on one committee so that you can spend most of the time with your child.  Thanks for being willing to help, we could not do it without you!

Thursday night the Tulsa Public School Board had a meeting to discuss ways that TPS will cut the budget. The ways that they have decided to meet the 12 million dollar budget cuts are: 2 furlough days (teacher pay cut and 2 less days of school for your children), consolidating 3 elementary schools and 1 middle school, eliminating some athletic programs and cutting some support personnel. The most important thing that we can ask for our parents to do is contact your state representatives. Below is a link that helps to find your local representatives and information on how to contact them. Let them know that Oklahoma is 50th in the nation for Education funding.

Dates for your calendar:

April 11/12 – Edisons take state Math Test (Super important to be on time and well-fed!!)
April 20/21 – Edison overnight
April 27 – Edison Program
May 11 – Field Study to Tulsa Historical Society

Edison Update 3-30-2017

Hello Edison Parents:

Today’s letter is jammed packed with lots of information that is very important, please read all the way through.

First and foremost, thank you for all the support amidst the news of budget cuts coming to TPS next year. Educators would love if you could please fill out the survey released by TPS. It is due by 6p.m. tonight. While taking this survey please aware of a couple of things: 1. When it mentions class sizes going up 1 or 2 students, it means changing the ratio of students per teacher. Last year this caused the Armstrong area to go from 6 certified teachers to 4 certified teachers. This changed our classes from 20 students to 30 students. 2. We have attached a flow-chart of administration roles in TPS, this is just for you to be aware of the positions that are at our Education Service Center. Remember, your opinion really does matter. https://www.tulsaschools.org/1_Administration/_documents/pdf/OrganizationalChart.pdf

Mayo is excited to host a Family Math Night TONIGHT, March 30th!  The event will be from 6:30-7:30 in the Mayo Cafeteria and Library.  We will have activities for all elementary ages and ideas/games you can enjoy and then play at home with your child(ren).  We hope to see you there!  A flyer is attached.

**********You will notice in the dates below that the Edisons will be taking the OCCTs April 4, 5, 11, and 12.  These are the mandated state tests.  We have a tradition at Mayo to help put the kids at ease each morning that they test.  We ask parents (and other friends and family members) to write four notes (one for each day of testing) that the student gets to read before they test.  They LOVE hearing your encouraging words!  The notes do not have to be long...just something that will make your child smile and relax.  Please put each note in an envelope (or fold them) and label with your child's name and which day to give it to them (day 1, day 2, etc.)  If they are not date specific, just put their name on the outside.  We need these notes by TOMORROW, March 31 so we have time to organize them in their testing folders.  Please keep this a secret from your child...we want them to be surprised!**********

REMINDER!!!! DUE TOMORROW!!!! We have received very few notes and your students really appreciate reading your encouraging words!!

Also, we will be sending home your student’s Report of Student Progress today! Please look for it in their backpacks. It is very important that you see these. If you have any questions, please contact your student’s homebase teacher.

Continue to hold on tight…the next two months might get bumpy!  As you can see by the calendar below, there is a lot happening in the Edison area and at Mayo in general.  Please try to read and refer to the weekly emails and other correspondence from Mr. Joslin for important dates and reminders.

Dates for your calendar:

March 30 – Family Math Night at Mayo
March 31 – Testing notes due
April 4/5 – Edisons take state Reading Test (Super important to be on time and well-fed!!)

Edison Update 3-9-2017

Good morning Edison families!

Today is the deadline for parents to turn in their reservation for the Edison overnight on April 20-21.  If we don’t receive the form and payment for parents by the end of the school day, we will count on your child attending without an adult.  We have students attend each year without a parent, and we take very good care of them!

Thanks to those who attended conferences Tuesday!  We love watching the students show you what they know.  This afternoon, from 3:30-6:30, is another opportunity for you to attend.  We hope to see all families!

We hope you have a wonderful Spring Break!  We will see you back at school on Tuesday, March 21st!

Edison Update 3-2-2017

Dear Edison Families,

TOMORROW is FREE DRESS DAY for spring pictures. Make sure you have turned your picture money in to Mrs. Jennings in the office. We cannot wait to see everyone’s personal style. But please make sure you are following district guidelines.

Please ask your student if they enjoyed our egg-salad sandwiches. Today we celebrated finishing Because of Winn-Dixie by recreating the party that they have in the book. Your student was able to try egg-salad sandwiches, Dump punch and dill pickles. Most of the students really enjoyed it. We also watched the movie, Because of Winn-Dixie. We will compare and contrast the similarities and differences tomorrow.

THANK YOU to all of the Edison parents that came and danced with us at the Mayo Kicks Auction. We had a great time raising money for our school. If you bought the Edison playdate we will be sending out information soon!

Another friendly reminder that our enrichment classes start at 8:00am. If your student is late, they miss critical lessons and instruction.  Our enrichment time is an intense hour of reading instruction and is required by the district.  Please ensure your child is at school, ready to learn by 8:00.  Thank you for your help!

Thank you to those who have returned the overnight information!  We have extended the deadline to return this form until the last day of conferences, Thursday, March 9th.  Attached is another copy of the Edison overnight form in case you need it.

Student-Led Conferences will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings NEXT WEEK. All Edison teachers will be available from 3:30 to 6:30. We are striving for 100% participation. Your student has a lot to be proud of and would love to show you around our Edison Area. When you come make sure you sign-in and visit with your student’s homebase teacher. We cannot wait to brag about your student.

Edison Update 2-3-2017

Dear Edison Families,

We sent home the results from the latest battery L of tests the Edisons endured. There is a letter attached and if you have any questions please let us know.

Reminders:
February 10th at 2:15 will be our Friendship parties with family. On this day we also pass out friendship cards (a.k.a Valentines).  Please help your child prepare 2 sets of cards. One set is to give to family members-16 plus family teacher. The other set is for the homebase group-20 students plus 1 teacher (or 60 if you want to give every Edison student a card).  Please put the cards in a bag labeled with your child’s name and with the label “homebase” or “family.” Please do not address the cards to specific children.  Please start this job soon! It takes a while to write your name so many times!  It is fine to attach a piece of candy or a sticker to the cards if you would like.  Please be mindful that some children have peanut allergies and avoid candy with nuts.

February 25th, join the Mayo PTA, staff and parents for our Annual Mayo Kicks Auction. It is a super fun event that benefits your student’s every day at Mayo.

Dates for your calendar:

February 10             Friendship Parties at 2:15 in Family
February 10             Friendship Card Exchange
February 20            President’s Day – No school
February 25            Mayo Auction

In Literacy, we are finishing up the novel, Because of Winn Dixie.  We will be working on this for the next few weeks.  We have been focusing on Figurative Language (Simile, Metaphor, Hyperbole, Personification, Alliteration, and Onomatopoeia), Cause and Effect, and Comprehension.

In Math, we are still working on Fractions, Multiplication (through 8s), and Graphing.  Please help your child with memorizing their multiplication facts and continue reading each night!
