• Please look for your child’s report of student progress in today’s home and back. Please read the information and celebrate your child’s success! This is yours to keep.   

 

• We had a wonderful time at the overnight!  Thank you to those of you who helped prepare for our overnight and those of you who helped us throughout the night!

 

• Donna Wade will be the long-term substitute for Mrs. Beckman during her maternity leave.  Mrs. Wade was the substitute for Mrs. Najera during her maternity leave.  She is a former preschool teacher and is excited for the opportunity to join us!  Mrs. Wade will join us in early November.  

 

·         The fifth graders are hosting a Fall Carnival tomorrow!  Please see the attached flyer for all the important information regarding his event. 

 

·         The following is a very important note from Mr. Joslin regarding admission to Mayo for next year. 

The application window for PK students opens on Monday, November 9.  Applications should be available online at that date.  Parents should visit http://www.tulsaschools.org/enroll for additional information.  Incoming PK students of current Mayo students receive sibling preference.  However, you MUST still complete the online application by the deadline on  Friday, January 15.  Existing parents will need to obtain a letter from Mr. Joslin before submitting the application.  You should also email or call Mrs. Jennings in the office and let her know the name of the sibling applying. (jenniga@tulsaschools.org)  The lottery will be held on Wednesday, February 4 at Thoreau at 6:00PM.  You do not have to be present.  Notification letters are scheduled to be sent out Thursday, February 11. 

New parents must attend a tour of Mayo and obtain a letter signed by Mr. Joslin, which indicates that the parent attended the tour.  These tours are for adults only.  Please call the office (918-925-1500) to reserve a spot at one of the following tours:

• Our Thanksgiving lunch will be Tuesday, November 24th this is a tradition at Mayo. Parents, grandparents and friends are invited to eat a Thanksgiving lunch with your child. We will send more details later. We just wanted you to mark your calendar.

Edison Update 10-29

Dear Edison Families,

 

Reports of Student Progress are in the Home and Back folders today.  Please read the accompanying blue paper which explains Mayo's grading process.  Celebrate your child's success and please let your child's Homebase teacher know if you have any questions.

 

We hope your child told you about our Field Study to Philbrook Museum on Tuesday.  Thanks to a grant, every third grader in TPS will get to go to the museum this year.  We looked at several pieces of art and then got to create our own art. 

 

Today we had Fall Parties during family time.  Thanks to those parents who organized the parties, sent supplies for games or crafts, and/or sent goodies.  If you were not contacted by your child's family party coordinator, please let your child's family teacher know and they can put you in touch so you can contribute next time. 

 

Tomorrow, the Feathered Friends Family will be leading Celebrations.  The Mayo Foundation will be giving awards to those that raised the most money for the Made in the Shade Jog-a-thon.  Thanks for all of your support with this event! 

  

Fall Carnival!!! – Our Fall Carnival is coming up TOMORROW from 6:30-8:30PM. This is something that the 5^th graders organize to raise money for their end of the year trip and it is open to all Mayo friends and families. A flyer is attached with more information about admission, ticket sales and activities. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Report Cards-Report Cards come home today in your child’s home and back.  

 

How to Read Report Cards:

Not every standard will be marked for each subject.  We follow a TPS Pacing Calendar to ensure that ALL objectives are taught by the end of the year. So, if an area is not marked, it will be taught in a different quarter.

If your child has received a one for that category then he/she has mastered all objectives covered for that category this quarter.

If your child has received a two for a category that means he/she is either still working or progressing on it themselves or the class is still working on it together.  This may also mean that we’ve only introduced a subject, but haven’t assessed for it yet. Please do not be alarmed by a two on your child’s report! Twos are a good thing!

If your child has received a three then that means that your child is showing no evidence of the skills covered in that category and will benefit from extra support at home. 

We no longer use a “P” for progressing. In Literacy, Math, Science, and Social Studies your child will receive a “S” for progressing satisfactorily, or a “N” for not yet at grade level, but working toward it.

Armstrong Update 10-29

Greetings Armstrong Parents!

 

            Thank you to the parents who accompanied us to The Air and Space Museum on Monday!!! We always appreciate parent help!! Don’t forget that the 5^th graders have a field trip tomorrow to Gilcrease.  They will be in their regular uniform and will be leaving after lunch, so no sack lunch is needed and they will be back by 2:00.  Please read below for new information!

 

Some FYIs:

- The Feathered Friends will be on stage during Celebrations tomorrow and also during the assembly Jog-A-Thon winners will be announced. 

-Parents, please keep in mind with Halloween coming up that students shouldn’t be bringing large amounts of candy to school.  They may bring a couple of pieces for lunch, but please make sure they aren’t hiding pieces elsewhere.

 

-Reports of student progress are coming home today in Home N’ Backs; if you have any questions please e-mail your homebase teacher

 

-The Armstrong area has had a rough month in regards to hateful words and bullying among the students.  Mr. Joslin was in our area yesterday speaking to all the students about it and we are hoping that this will be a stop to all the negativity.  If you have time, please speak to your student about this subject and guide them on some good things to do in those situations.  Also, encourage your child to report any form of bullying to a teacher or staff member.  Bullying is the repeated harassment of someone in order to make them feel bad, either emotionally or physically. 

 

 - Please remember to return your home ‘n backs to the tubs in the cafeteria or the front lobby. Any items that need to be returned have your students give to their homeroom teacher.

 

- If you were unable to attend conferences and would like to meet with your child’s teachers, please feel free to email them to set up a meeting after school. Also at the conference you and your child had the opportunity to sign an ipledge5 postcard to ensure we are working together for a successful year for your child. Science Homework – Don’t forget that science homework is changing with the change in the schedule.  Students will receive their assigned pages on the Friday of their science week and they will be due the Monday of their next science week. Essentially they will have 2 weeks to complete the work. We are working on getting books for the few students that do not have them yet. Please refer any questions to Mrs. Hewitt or Mr. Guss. The current homework due: 4th grade will need to do pages 255-259 and 260-265 and 5th grade will do pages 185-186 and 192-197.

 

Social Studies Homework – Please be checking your emails regularly for information about Social Studies homework from your child’s Social Studies teacher.

 

Literacy Homework - All literacy classes except Read 180 should be getting (or have gotten) a new novel sent home this week for homework. We are excited for the homework this year; we had about 90% complete and turn in the homework! This is awesome but we strive for 100%. If you notice your student still has the previous novel, please have them return it or they will be responsible for supplying their own this next round. IMPORTANT 5^TH GRADE INFORMATION:
- Thank you to everyone who has brought candy in!!! We never expected so much!!! We have decided that we are good on candy for now, but may be asking again as we get closer to winter parties in December.

 

- The 5^th grade Carnival is TOMORROW!!!  If you have any questions please e-mail Christine Davis at: cgermany74055@hotmail.com.  We hope to see everyone there having fun and volunteering!

 

- 5th Grade Trip Fundraising Meeting – Our next meeting will be next Wednesday, November 4th at 6:30PM in Mrs. Moore’s area. We will be discussing upcoming fundraisers and possible trip dates. If you are unable to make it and have any ideas, please email Mrs. Moore (mooreco2@tulsaschools.org), Mr. Guss (gussal@tulsaschools.org) and Mrs. Smith (embryel@tulsaschools.org).

 

-If you have not already, please turn in your parent payment commitment form.  Mrs. Moore has only received a few and we need these to determine future details of our trip.  I have attached another copy in case you need it.

 

-The kids decided…. We are going to St. Louis!!!  Start researching on some great places to visit while there!

 

- 5^th grade Thoreau Shadow Dates and Applications – We have specific dates set aside for the 5^th grade Armstrongs to shadow at Thoreau in December. These dates are December 8^th and 9^th.  If your child’s homebase teacher is Mr. Najera, Mrs. Hewitt, or Mrs. Moore then you need to sign up for the 8^th.  If your child is in one of the other 3 homebases then you need to sign up for the 9^th. The purpose of these days is for the 5^th graders to have a chance to “shadow” a Thoreau student and participate in what would be a “typical” day in 6^th grade; you must contact Thoreau to reserve your child’s spot (this is for your child only.  If you wish to tour with your child those must be set up separately). Your child will be spending all day at Thoreau and will need to be dropped off in the morning.  Mrs. Moore sent home an e-mail with specifics last week.  If you still have questions feel free to e-mail Mrs. Moore or Mrs. Smith.  All Mayo students have an automatic “in” into Thoreau for their 6^th grade year, however; you will still need to fill out an application and return it to the ESC during the application window. The application process for the 2016-2017 school year opens at midnight Monday, November 9, 2015 and will be available on the TPS website.

Goodall Book Character Day

Just a reminder that tomorrow is Book Character Day for Goodalls!  
Your child needs to be in costume, and bring the book in which he/she is a character.  You should have received the hint sheet in last week's homework folder.  If not, here are the clues your child needs to prepare:

Book Character events will only be half-day, so be sure to bring your uniform for the second half of the day.  THANK YOU!!!
