Armstrong Update 12-10

Bonjour Armstrong Parents!

We have had a good week back from break.  We are looking forward to Winter Parties on the 17thand Winter Break to begin on the 21st.  There are a few additions to this week’s newsletter; please look at the words in bold.

Some FYIs:

- The Smiley and Eel Families will be leading Celebrations tomorrow!

- Please remind your child that their lunch is to be eaten in the cafeteria. There have been several students bringing extra chips from their lunch onto the playground during recess. Food is to stay in the cafeteria and not come out to the playground.

 - Please remember to return your home ‘n backs to the tubs in the cafeteria or the front lobby. Any items that need to be returned have your students give to their homeroom teacher.

- Don’t forget to check the lost & found and the lunchbox table on a regular basis!

- Don’t forget to buy Candy Grams for our Winter parties next Thursday! They will be on sale every day before and after school and the cost is 50 cents apiece. If you want to order some, but can’t make it up to school there is a form in your Home N’ Back you can fill out and send back. The 5th grade appreciates it!

Pajama Day – The Armstrongs will be having our pajama day on December 18th, the Friday before we leave for our winter break. Typically on this day we do winter related activities during our math and reading classes and then watch a movie in the afternoon with popcorn and hot chocolate as a treat. Pajama day always comes with questions concerning appropriate clothing to wear and if robes, stuffed animals, blankets, etc. are permitted. The parameters for next Friday are as follows:

·         Pajamas must follow TPS dress code – no spaghetti straps, tank tops must follow the two finger width rule, no v-neck shirts, shorts are to be no shorter than fingertip length (2 inches above the knee)

·         Students must wear REAL SHOES to school, during transitions, specials and lunch.

·         Students may bring house shoes or slippers, but these will only be worn during our movie time.

·         Please DO NOT BRING stuffed animals, pillows or blankets.

·         You MAY WEAR ROBES as long as the pajamas underneath the robe are appropriate and follow TPS dress code.

·         Consider wearing undershirts or shorts under your pajamas because pajamas are often made of thin, flimsy material.

·         If it seems inappropriate then don’t wear it.

Living Museum – Assignments have been handed out and research has started! This project is a big project; however, the final products won’t be due until March and most of the components will be completed here at school.  One component that needs to be done outside of school is to create a costume representing your character.  No worries!! We will be sending home more details on this in weeks to come so you don’t need to stress and do not need to contact a teacher regarding this. We will get you all the info you need! J

Biztown – Don’t forget that we are still in need of parents to commit to volunteering that day with us from 9-1:30. As a volunteer you will be required to watch 2 online training videos. You will be assigned a business to oversee the day of the trip, however; it cannot be your own child’s assigned business. Forms were sent home last week, if you have lost yours and would like another, please let Mrs. Smith or Mrs. Moore know. The homebases are scheduled to go to Biztown as follows:

·         February 8th: Najera, Hewitt, Moore- still needs at least 6 more volunteers!! Another form is attached in case you still want to volunteer.

·         February 9th: Smith, Guss, Molina- still needs at least 3 more volunteers!!! Another form is attached in case you still want to volunteer.

Please consider volunteering, it’s an awesome experience!

Mayo Application Window and Tour Dates – The application window for PK students is open!  Applications should be available online and parents can visit http://www.tulsaschools.org/enroll for additional information.  Incoming PK students of current Mayo students receive sibling preference.  However, you MUST still complete the online application by the deadline on Friday, January 15.  Existing parents will need to obtain a letter from Mr. Joslin before submitting the application.  The lottery will be held on Wednesday, February 4at Thoreau at 6:00PM.  You do not have to be present.  Notification letters are scheduled to be sent out Thursday, February 11.

Potential Pre-K parents must attend a tour of Mayo and obtain a letter signed by Mr. Joslin, which indicates that the parent attended the tour.  Tour dates have been scheduled for:

Wednesday, November 18 @ 8:30AM

Thursday, December 3 @ 8:30AM

Thursday, December 10 @ 8:30AM

Wednesday, December 16 @ 8:30AM

Thursday, January 14 @ 6:00PM

We will be conducting separate tours for parents who are interested in any available slots for K-5 for next school year.  The window for these applications is Monday, April 4 – Friday, April 22.  We have not yet scheduled those tours.

IMPORTANT 5TH GRADE INFORMATION:

- We will not be having another meeting until January.  If you wanted to pay in installments and haven’t had a chance to turn your $50 for this month in, make sure you do! It can be brought to one of the three of us or you can get in touch with Mallory Sanstra. If you ever have any questions, please email Mrs. Moore (mooreco2@tulsaschools.org), Mr. Guss (gussal@tulsaschools.org) and Mrs. Smith (embryel@tulsaschools.org).

-If you have not already done so, please turn in your parent payment commitment form.  Mrs. Moore is still missing 18!!!! I have attached another copy in case you need it.

5th grade Thoreau Shadow Dates and Applications – We have specific dates set aside for the 5th grade Armstrongs to shadow at Thoreau in December. These dates are NEXT TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY.  We have gotten word that the Tuesday Shadow Day is full so if you haven’t signed up please sign up for Wednesday (even if your child is in the other homebase group).

Your child will be spending all day at Thoreau and will need to be dropped off in the morning.  Mrs. Moore sent home an e-mail with specifics a few weeks ago.  If you still have questions feel free to e-mail Mrs. Moore or Mrs. Smith.

All Mayo students have an automatic “in” into Thoreau for their 6th grade year, however; you will still need to fill out an application and return it to the ESC during the application window. The application process for the 2016-2017 school year is now open and available on the TPS website.

-Make sure you are looking into middle schools!!  The application deadline is in January and we want every student to be able to go to an awesome school.  Make sure that you are applying to ALL middle schools that interest you and your child. Additionally, most middle schools (not Thoreau) ask for a Teacher Recommendation form from applicants.  These should be found online and need to be brought to Mrs. Baumgarten who will then have the teachers fill it out and return it to you in a sealed envelope.  If you have any middle school questions please feel free to ask your homebase teacher or talk to Mrs. Jennings or Mrs. Baumgarten in the office.

As always, if you have any questions please feel free to email your child’s homebase teacher, Mrs. Smith (embryel@tulsaschools.org) or myself (mooreco2@tulsaschools.org). I hope everyone has a great weekend!
