"Attendance Counts" Campaign

PRESS RELEASE:    Monday, Feb. 29, 2016

What:             TPS launches “Attendance Counts” campaign to increase student attendance

When:            Begins this week

Where:          Tulsa Public Schools

Contact:        Chris Payne at 918-746-6898 or paynech@tulsaschools.org

TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa Public Schools this week is launching Attendance Counts, a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of regular attendance at school. TPS is partnering with an organization called In Class Today to reach out to parents and guardians of students with frequent absences through a letter campaign. This initiative is research-based and proven effective in encouraging families to get children to school on time every day.

Each year an estimated 5 million to 7.5 million students nationally miss nearly a month of school, which puts them at significant risk of falling behind academically and failing to graduate from high school. Chronic absenteeism—or missing at least 10 percent of school days in a school year for any reason, excused or unexcused—is a primary cause of low academic achievement and a powerful predictor of those students who may eventually drop out of school.

“All children deserve the opportunity to develop their full academic and social potential,” said Deborah A. Gist, TPS superintendent. “It’s important that students, parents and guardians understand the full impact of absences. For example, students who miss two days of school each month lose a full month of learning each year. By working to eliminate chronic absenteeism in our schools, we can improve academic achievement, increase graduation rates, and prepare students for long-term success.”

Attendance Counts is designed to highlight the cumulative effect that absences have on a student’s entire academic career. Here’s how the letter campaign will work:

·        In mid-February, the first of three mailings will be sent to the parents of 60 percent of TPS students with the most absences during the 2015-16 school year as of Jan. 18, 2016.

·        The parent/guardian will receive the number of absences and a message about how even a small number of absences can add up to a lot of lost learning time. (See attached sample letters for an example).

·        Additional mailings will be sent in March and April, and will reflect the most up-to-date evidence on absence-reducing messaging. Letters will be delivered in English and Spanish.

To help eliminate chronic absenteeism, parents and families should:

1.     Make getting to school on time every day a priority.

2.     Talk with their children about the importance of school attendance from an early age.

3.     When necessary, create a safe space for children to share what’s keeping them from participating in school on a regular basis.

4.     Have a back-up plan for getting children to school when there are difficulties with transportation, family illness or other challenges.

5.     Schedule doctor and other appointments for after-school hours whenever possible.

6.     Monitor school attendance to make sure children are is in class every day.

7.     Contact the school to discuss supports and services that can help children maintain regular attendance.

For more information, parents may visit http://attendance.tulsaschools.org or e-mail questions and comments to attendancecounts@tulsaschools.org.

About In Class Today

In Class Today is a social enterprise that the Student Social Support R&D (S3) Lab has incubated within Harvard University and spun off as an independent entity in November 2015.  In Class Today’s mission is to reduce absences among at-risk Pre-K-12 students by 1,000,000 days per year by implementing proven, scalable and insanely high return-on-investment absence-reduction interventions. This is achievable given the unfortunate lack of proven or cost-effective alternatives available to schools, and the proven impact and low cost of the absence-reduction interventions developed by the S3 Lab.

In Class Today’s first product is a mail-based intervention that incorporates findings from experiments the S3 Lab has conducted with more than 287,000 at-risk students in some of the largest U.S. school districts. We are developing and testing strategies to amplify this effect, including targeting additional false beliefs, layering in text messages, and using predictive analytics to identify the most opportune times to communicate with parents and students.

Edison Update 2-25-2016

Hello Edison Families!

Some of you will be receiving letters in today's Home and Back regarding your child's Reading Sufficiency Act plan.  Based on the scores from this week's MAP Reading test, some students are now exempt from the State threat of automatic retention if they don't pass the OCCT Reading test in April.  Others have still not met the minimum requirements.  For these students, we need the paper signed and returned to school as quickly as possible. These papers will only come home if your child was placed on the Tulsa Public Schools RSA Plan at the beginning of the year.  Next week, we will send home the results of the MAP Reading and Math tests, as well as the latest SRI scores for ALL Edisons.  Please let us know if you have any questions.  We are pleased with the growth that we are seeing!

In math, we are working on ordering fractions using fraction strips.  We changed up our Number of the Day routine to include some different skills.  One of the skills they are working on (and that they NEED to know how to do for the OCCT) is making change from a five dollar bill.  They have two different strategies that we have worked on in class and we would appreciate you practicing this at home.  We are also working on graphing data and drawing conclusions based on that data.

We have CHICKS! In science, we are continuing our unit on heredity and the behavior of organisms. Next week, we will begin studying how our mealworms will react when they are exposed to different stimuli. Ask your Edison how many chicks have hatched and how they feel about the mealworms. We will continue to watch the chicks grow until the end of the school year.

Thanks to those of you who helped your child get their program costume to school today!  We have been rehearsing this week and will be ready to perform for you next Tuesday, March 1st at 6:30p.m.  The performance will be in the Wilson Cafetorium.  Please have your child come to the Edison area that evening at 6:00.  Parents and friends can go directly to Wilson. We will have signs up throughout the school to direct you.  Also, please bring a blanket to sit on during the program (like a picnic).  We want everyone to be able to see their child and the Cafetorium doesn't have enough room for a large amount of chairs and room for us to perform.  We will have a few chairs set up in the back for those who can't get up and down from the floor and for the elderly.

We will be going on a field study to the Port of Catoosa and the Will Rogers Museum on Thursday, March 10th.  If your child needs a sack lunch from the cafeteria for this trip, please return the attached Sack Lunch Request Form https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B9tK7eFBM-uPblI4X0ttZ2k3Um8/edit?usp=docslist_api&filetype=msword by next Wednesday, March 2nd.

Summer School Opportunity:  Tulsa Public Schools offers a summer school program for all students entering grades 1-6.  We encourage you to seriously consider this opportunity. Please fill out the application from last week’s home-and-back.  If you need an application, please check in the office. Completed forms are due by April 29.

March 2nd will be Wacky Wednesdayin recognition of Dr. Seuss’ Birthday and Read Across America.  We have many plans in place for this Community Day and hope the kids will enjoy them.  The kids can wackify their Mayo uniforms by wearing it backwards with crazy socks, mix match shoes, crazy hair and more. After checking in with homebase, students will go to family at 8:15 to start this fun day! We will have an all school picnic lunch from 11:45-12:15. We will be eating on the front lawn. Our  day will end with an “Oh the Places You’ll Go” balloon release around 1:20. After our balloon release, students will go back to homebase for the remainder of the day. We hope your student is looking forward to this great day!

Armstrong Update 2-25-16

Greetings Armstrong Parents!

It seems as though we have been through a whirlwind of activities since the last Armstrong Update, the big ones being our Overnight in OKC and the 5th Grade Writing Test. I first want to thank ALL of the parents that joined us in OKC last Thursday and Friday for our Armstrong Overnight, thanks to your help and involvement I can easily say that it was a success! I know that things weren’t perfect and a few things did not go as planned, however; the students, parents and teachers did a great job of showing flexibility at every turn (especially CiCi’s!). In our homebases this week we have been writing Thank You notes to CiCi’s and the First Unitarian Church for the excellent service and wonderful place to stay.

After this last week we are officially able to say that we have *1* OCCT Test finished and out of the way, the 5th Grade Writing Test! Whew! We were incredibly impressed with all of the 5th graders and the hard work that they put into preparing for the test as well as persevering through it and doing their personal best. The rest of the state testing will resume in April with the 4th and 5th Grade Reading and Math OCCT and the 5th Grade Science and Social Studies OCCT, more details to come after Spring Break.

Last, but certainly not least, our Armstrong Living Museum is just around the corner on Friday March 4th. Please read through the rest of the newsletter for more information on this presentation, including costume ideas as well as information on the upcoming Armstrong Colonial Day on Tuesday March 8th. There is also a schedule of when your child’s homebase will be making their Living Museum Presentations listed below as well; we would love for you to visit if you are able!

LIVING MUSEUM COSTUMES – Information is attached. The costumes can be as elaborate as you want, but simple will work too, as long as it reflects that time period.  You do not need to go out and by an expensive costume either; I have attached information on how to create costumes from that time period using things you can find at the thrift store or in your closet. Also, I have had a few parents e-mail and ask to get their student’s person changed.  We told everyone from the beginning that we wouldn’t be doing any switching; however, if your student was given a person of the opposite gender and you do not feel comfortable letting them dress like that gender, then we have a solution.  We told the students that they may dress as someone from that time period and be an “interpreter” for their character.  They will still be wearing period clothing, but it can be clothing to reflect their gender.  Since the Living Museum is coming up on March 4th, getting started now will ensure less stress the week of the museum.

Colonial Day – The Armstrong Area held their first Colonial Day last year and it was such a success that we are continuing that tradition again this year. We are excited to hold our 2ndArmstrong Colonial Day on Tuesday, March 8th. Students may dress in period clothing on this day (reuse your Living Museum costume! J). We will be visited by a Ben Franklin interpreter to kick off this day and you are welcome to join us for any or all of the activities we have planned! We will be sending home a schedule with next week’s newsletter, however; if you are willing to help volunteer with activities that day please email Mrs. Smith (embryel@tulsaschools.org) with the times you are available.

IMPORTANT 5TH GRADE INFORMATION:

- If you wanted to pay in installments and haven’t had a chance to turn your $50 for this month in, make sure you do! It can be brought to one of the three of us or you can get in touch with Mallory Sanstra. If you ever have any questions, please email Mrs. Moore (mooreco2@tulsaschools.org), Mr. Guss (gussal@tulsaschools.org) and Mrs. Smith (embryel@tulsaschools.org). We have quite a few people who said they were coming, but haven’t paid anything and haven’t contacted Mallory.  Please contact Mallory if you are one of those people! Thanks!

As always, if you have any questions please feel free to email your child’s homebase teacher, myself (embryel@tulsaschools.org) or Mrs. Moore (mooreco2@tulsaschools.org).
