Armstrong Update 2-4-2016

Greetings Armstrong Parents!

Thank you so much to all of the parents who came with us to Crystal Bridges, it was a huge success! I hope everyone had a great time, I know the students and teachers did! The docents at Crystal Bridges were very impressed with the Mayo kids and several commented on their respectful behavior and insightful questions. Way to go Mayo kids and parents! Our parents are such an asset to our field studies; we couldn’t do it without you! Speaking of field studies, we have two big ones coming up, please read through the newsletter for all of the important details. If you have any questions, please email your child’s homebase teacher, Mrs. Moore (mooreco2@tulsaschools.org) or Mrs. Smith (embryel@tulsaschools.org).

FYIs and Reminders:

-          Tomorrow is Early Release Friday and Mayo Spirit Day! Don’t forget to arrange transportation for your child to be picked up from school at 1PM. Students may wear regular Mayo bottoms with a Mayo spirit top.

-          Summer School enrollment has started, please see attachment for more information.

-          Please remember to return your home ‘n backs to the tubs in the cafeteria or the front lobby. Please make sure to get these returned every week before Thursday morning.  There is a tub in the office and one in the cafeteria where you can drop them.  Thanks so much!

-          Don’t forget to check the lost & found and the lunchbox table on a regular basis!

-          Friendship Party Candy Grams are on sale for $.50 apiece through Tuesday February 9th. You can buy them in the cafeteria before and after school or send the attached flyer with your payment to the office.

-          We are also selling SMENCILS before and after school in the cafeteria to help the 5th graders raise money for their big trip at the end of the year. Smencils are smelly pencils and the kids LOVE them. They are $1.00 and come in many different scents. Please help support our 5th Grade!

-          Another 5th Grade babysitting night is coming up just in time for Valentine’s Day! See the attached information on how to sign up your child for a fun night at Mayo to help support our 5th grade and so you can have a night out!

-          Dismissal Reminder – If you pick your student up, you should always enter through the North cafeteria door and exit through the South cafeteria door.  This allows for the safety of everyone and is not meant to inconvenience anyone.  Thanks for your cooperation and consideration.

Friendship Parties and Valentines – February 11th at 2:15 will be our Friendship parties with family. On this day we also pass out friendship cards (a.k.a Valentines).  Please help your child prepare 2 sets of cards. One set is to give to family members-15 plus family teacher. The other set is for the homebase group-21 students.  Please put the cards in a bag labeled with your child’s name and with the label “homebase” or “family.” Please do not address the cards to specific children. It is fine to attach a piece of candy or a sticker to the cards if you would like.  Please be mindful that some children have peanut allergies and avoid candy with nuts.

Biztown –

February 8th: Najera, Hewitt, Moore Homebases

February 9th: Smith, Guss, Molina Homebases

As was announced in last week’s newsletter, Elizabeth Scheer was voted mayor for her triad. Way to go Elizabeth! The other triad held their elections on Thursday and a big congratulations goes to Christian Davis who was elected mayor of his triad. A huge shout out to all of the candidates and their campaign managers for the creative campaigning and leadership skills shown by all.

If you volunteered to join us at Biztown, you will be receiving a final confirmation letter with the business you will be supervising in your child’s home and back. If you have any questions or concerns please let Mrs. Moore or Mrs. Smith know. All volunteers will need to visit https://www.juniorachievement.org/web/ja-ok/ja-biztown-volunteer for your required training before the day of the field study.  If you cannot accomplish this before then please contact a teacher and they can help you. Please let us know ASAP if you have volunteered but there is a conflict. We are depending on our parent volunteers to help supervise businesses and need to make sure that all of our volunteers are on board.

Overnight in OKC – Our Armstrong overnight (for all Armstrongs) is quickly approaching as well.  If you have not sent in your overnight information form, please do that so we can get an accurate count of parents who plan on attending.  We need to know numbers as soon as we can so we can buy food and book spaces.

Thank you to those who have sent in your overnight form and volunteered to help with grocery shopping. Mrs. Smith will be sending out an email early next week with details on how we can use your help. These overnights wouldn’t happen without all the awesome support we get from parents, but we do ask that siblings stay home.  Thanks for all you do!

Living Museum – Living Museum assignments were handed out and students began their research before the Winter Break. We will be putting our research on hold until after our visit to JA Biztown and then we will begin back in full swing. All students will have ample amount of time in their year-long theme class rotation to research their assigned person, however; research outside of school if also encouraged if you are able, but not required.

This project will culminate in a presentation and a five paragraph essay that will be written in your child’s literacy class. For the presentation your child will be required to make a tri-fold poster (this will be completed at school) and they will also be required to dress up as their person (this will be completed at home). There will be more details coming home about costume requirements the closer we get to our presentations. The Living Museum Presentations will be held on March 4th. There will be a schedule sent home of times beforehand and we are encouraging all parents to come and visit if they are able. Please let Mrs. Moore or Mrs. Smith know if you have any questions.
