Armstrong Update 9-24-2015

Greetings Armstrong Parents!

Please read carefully because I have added some new information!

Don’t forget that the Hedgehog Family is on stage Friday for Celebrations. For those of you who are new to Mayo, every Friday we have a Celebrations assembly in the gym. Each week it is led by a different family, and we celebrate student and staff achievements throughout at the week as well as weekly birthdays. When it is your child’s turn on stage their family teacher will send a reminder note home. Please feel free to join us on Fridays; we have a lot of fun!

Attached is the Talent Release form that we send home annually. Please sign and return to the Mayo front office ASAP, if you haven’t done so already.

Home and Backs come home on Thursdays (today)!  We have a lot of Armstrongs who are forgetting to return their home and back envelopes. Please make sure to have your child return their envelope promptly.  The home and back committee put a lot of time and effort into these and we really appreciate their dedication and hard work.

Literacy Homework – Remember that homework is due October 9th, 2015. The students need to read their novel in its entirety and complete ONE choice board option. The novel should be returned on the due date. Please email Mrs. Hewitt, Mr. Najera or Mr. Guss if you have any questions.

Science Homework - Science homework will be assigned weekly.  Students will receive a homework-work book which they will keep at home.  The assigned pages will be communicated to students in class and should then be turned in the following week.  At that time they will receive the next assignment.  This has begun this week, so your child should have science homework by Friday.

Social Studies Homework- There will be no new homework given out this week due to the continuation of work with maps in class, however, there will be new homework sent out next week so please look for the details in next week’s newsletter.  If you have any questions please e-mail Mr. Najera (najerhu@tulsaschools.org) or Ms. Molina (molinje@tulsaschools.org).

Just a reminder!  The beginnings strings (first year) classes are on Mondays and Tuesdays and the advanced strings (second year) classes are on Mondays and Thursdays.

The Jog-a-Thon will be a fall event this year!  Mark your calendars for Friday, October 9 for Miles for Mayo-Made in the Shade!  We will be raising funds to construct a shade shelter on the Mayo playground. Your child's pledge envelope should have been in last week's Home and Back; if you need another make sure to ask in the office.  We hope you will help your child secure lots of pledges so that we can make our dream of a shady place on the playground come true this year!

I can’t believe it, but our Fall Student-Led conferences are just around the corner! At Mayo, we have student-led conferences; it is an opportunity for your child to show you what they have been learning in their classes. Our conferences this year will be held on Monday, Oct. 12th and Tuesday, Oct. 13th. Come to the Armstrong area between 3:15 and 5:45to have your child lead your through their classes and talk with their teachers about any questions or concerns you may have.

We have scheduled our field study to JA Biztown! We will be going February 8th (Moore, Hewitt, Najera homebases) and February 9th (Smith, Guss, Molina homebases). JA Biztown is an awesome opportunity for students to explore their future interests in the business place and learn more about how our economy functions. It is a great experience for our students because it builds on their background knowledge of micro-society as Goodalls and bridges the transition to micro-society at Thoreau. More information will come home as the dates get closer.

The field study to the Tulsa Air and Space Museum is coming up on October 26th (it will be here before you know it!).  We aren’t sure of a time yet, but would love parents to come with us.  We also aren’t sure if parents will need to pay or not, but if they do, the maximum expense would be $8 and we would need everyone to drive themselves (or carpool).  Once again, as we get closer to this date I will send home more information.  Attached is a release form required by the Tulsa Air and Space Museum (TASM). Please fill out and send back ASAP. It should also be coming home as a hard copy in this week’s home and back.

You should be receiving a hard copy of the Helmzar release form in this week’s home and back, but I have also attached it to this e-mail. Although this field study isn’t until after Spring Break (March 21st and 22nd), we would like to get the release forms returned ASAP.

Don’t forget that our Armstrong Overnight is scheduled for February 18th and 19th in Oklahoma City. This is our big field study for the year and although it isn’t a requirement, a majority of the parents come.  We really appreciate parental support on these trips and would love for everyone to come who can.  Your child is encouraged to come even if you cannot because there will be plenty of adults and this trip is a direct tie-in with our curriculum. As we get closer to this time we will be sending out more details.

Just scheduled!!!  We are excited to announce that the 5th graders will be attending a presentation at Gilcrease museum on Friday, October 30th.  The presentation is entitled: “Medicine in Early America” where we will discover the world of 18th century medicine with one of George Washington’s oldest and closest friends.  We won’t need parents to attend this field study.

The 4th graders will be attending their own presentation at Gilcrease on March 9th at 12:30.  This presentation is entitled: “The Star Spangled Banner”where early music experts David & Ginger Hildebrand tell the story of our national anthem through the popular songs of 200 years ago.  This presentation is a good bridge for the Social Studies objectives the students will learn in the 5th grade.  We won’t need parents to attend this field study.

Reminders:

-          Gum and candy are not allowed at Mayo (unless you have a teacher’s permission or it is consumed only in the Cafeteria at lunchtime).  Also, if your child brings their cellphone to school, please remind them to leave it with Mrs. Jennings in the front office.

-          The 5th graders will be attending their Any Given Child performance next Friday, October 1st.  They will leave school at 9:30 A.M. to go to a one-hour performance at the Tulsa Ballet and be back in time for lunch.  We don’t need any parents to attend on this trip, but we appreciate your participation otherwise!

5th Grade Parents:  2 very important papers went home with your child yesterday:

·         First was a flyer explaining the chocolate fundraiser we are about to start (if you have any questions please contact Lara Mattox: laramattox@yahoo.com). Lara was just informed that the chocolate will not actually be ready until the middle or end of next week.  I will e-mail everyone when she lets me know it is in.

·         The second was a contract that needs to be signed by you and your child that commits to helping with fundraisers for the 5th grade trip.  Please read this letter carefully and send back the bottom portion, signed, ASAP. I have also attached it to this e-mail if you’d like to print it and send it back.

·         WE NEED EVERY FIFTH GRADER TO DONATE ONE BAG OF MIXED/VARIETY CANDY FOR THE FALL CARNIVAL AND FOR FALL PARTIES CANDY-GRAMS. PLEASE TAKE THESE BAGS TO MRS. MOORE OR MRS. SMITH.

·         Next Monday, September 28th, the 5th graders will be participating in their Human Growth and Development class and next Tuesday, September 29th they will participate in their HIV class. Remember, you only need to sign and return the forms we sent home if you want your child to OPT OUT of these classes. All 5th graders will be attending both classes unless we receive in writing that you would prefer otherwise.

·         5th Grade Trip Fundraising Meeting – Our next meeting will be Monday, October 5th at 6:30PM in Mrs. Moore’s area. We will be discussing upcoming fundraisers and possible trip dates. if you are unable to make it and have any ideas, please email Mrs. Moore (mooreco2@tulsaschools.org), Mr. Guss (gussal@tulsaschools.org) and Mrs. Smith (embryel@tulsaschools.org).

·         Candy Gram Extended Day! – Mallory Sanstra will be holding an extended day class on Friday October 9thto help the 5th graders make candy grams to sell for Family Fall Parties. If you or your child are interested in signing up for this one-time extended day class, please email Mrs. Moore (mooreco2@tulsaschools.org) or Mrs. Smith (embryel@tulsaschools.org

·         Thoreau Shadow Days! – Every year the fifth graders spend a day shadowing at Thoreau. This year we will be going over a 2-day period due to our growth in size. The dates scheduled are December 8th (Moore, Hewitt, Najera) and December 9th (Smith, Guss, Molina). Look for more details to come.

As always, if you have any questions please feel free to email your child’s homebase teacher, myself (mooreco2@tulsaschools.org) or Mrs. Smith (embryel@tulsaschools.org). I hope everyone has a great weekend!
