Goodall Update 3-31-2016

 March 24, 2016

Goodall Overnight-We are so excited about our trip next week!  We have a great deal of activities planned and are looking forward to building our Mayo community!

We will be leaving at 7:55 sharp on Thursday morning, April 7th.  If your child is late that morning, they may be left behind.  We are to be at Camp Dakani at 10:00 am so that we can start our rotations.

If you are driving, you can follow the bus or you can meet us at the camp.  On the morning of the trip, there will be a packet that you need to get from your child’s homebase teacher. The packet includes directions to Camp Dakani and the OKC Zoo.  It will also have a schedule for both days and a group that you are assigned to for the two days.  You will also receive a sign to put in your car so that we can identify the Mayo parents.

Today, we are sending home a large, plastic trash bag (for sleeping items) and a packing list of items needed for the overnight. The trash bag is to be returned on Wednesday, April 6th to your homebase area.  This is to assure that all children have their supplies they need for the overnight.  In the past, we have had students that did not have sleeping bags, pajamas, etc. because they did not bring the bag early.  This also makes it much easier to load buses in the morning. We prefer that your child’s supplies are loaded on the bus instead of riding in your car.  This way, we are sure that all the students have their overnight supplies.  This is their “homework” for this week.

Also, attached to this e-mail is a sack lunch request form. Click here for the form:  https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B9tK7eFBM-uPM1hoMThFNmZxTEE/edit?usp=docslist_api&filetype=msword.  If you child will need a lunch from the cafeteria for Thursday, you MUST return it by this Friday, April 1st.  Our cafeteria staff must know so they can plan accordingly. The form ONLY needs to be returned if your child needs a lunch from the cafeteria.

If you have not returned any of the slips listed above, we need them ASAP!!

Report cards are also coming home today.  They will be in your child’s home and back.  If you have any questions, please contact your child’s Literacy/ Math teacher.

If you were unable to attend conferences, please make an appointment to see your child’s literacy/math teacher in order to review and sign your child’s MAP scores.

Summer School Opportunity:  Tulsa Public Schools offers a summer school program for all students entering grades 1-6.  If you need an application please let your child’s homebaseteacher know.  Your child’s teacher may be contacting you to recommend this program as well.  Completed forms are due by April 29.

Edisons Update 3-31-2016

Hello Edison families,

We hope all of you are safe from the scary weather last night!

Tomorrow is the last TPS Early Release Day.  Mayo will be dismissed at 1:00.  It is also a Mayo Spirit Day.  Your child may wear a Mayo t-shirt and regular Mayo uniform bottoms.

If you haven't had a chance to turn in the bright orange paper regarding the upcoming overnight, we included another copy in your Home and Back today.  This contains important information about our overnight field study on April 21st and 22nd.  We must have this form returned from every Edison by Monday, April 4th in order to make final plans for our trip.  As you can imagine, planning a trip of this magnitude requires us to make some strict deadlines.  This is one of them.  Although we know every Edison will attend, we need to know which parent (if any) will attend so we can plan accordingly.  A parent does not have to attend, we know it is hard to take off work and we totally understand.  We will have lots of adult chaperones who will help us take very good care of your child. :)  A few of you have returned the sheet but did not include payment for the adult that will be attending.  Please send that money by the Monday deadline.  We have attached a copy of the paper at this link.
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B9tK7eFBM-uPSjRHT0hKUjB5aXc/edit?usp=docslist_api&filetype=msword

You will notice in the dates below that the Edisons will be taking the OCCTs April 12, 13, 14, and 15.  These are the mandated state tests.  If your child has an IEP, you will hear from the Special Services teachers about the date your child will test.  We have a tradition at Mayo to help put the kids at ease each morning that they test.  We ask parents (and other friends and family members) to write four notes (one for each day of testing) that the student gets to read before they test.  They LOVE hearing your encouraging words!  The notes do not have to be long...just something that will make your child smile and relax.  Please put each note in an envelope (or fold them) and label with your child's name and which day to give it to them (day 1, day 2, etc.)  If they are not date specific, just put their name on the outside.  We need these notes by Friday, April 8th so we have time to organize them in their testing folders.  Please keep this a secret from your child...we want them to be surprised!

The 5th graders are having a Garage Sale this Saturday at the school.  Please see the attached flyer for details!  They are also hosting a school Luau dance on April 8thwhich will be lots of fun!  There is a flyer attached for that as well.

Please make note of the following dates:

April 1 (Friday) - TPS Early Release day at 1:00 and Mayo Spirit Day
April 12 (Tuesday) - Edisons take OCCT Reading Part 1
April 13 (Wednesday) - Edisons take OCCT Reading Part 2
April 14 (Thursday) - Edisons take OCCT Math Part 1
April 15 (Friday) - Edisons take OCCT Math Part 2

-            Tomorrow is an Early Release and Spirit Day

-            The 5th grade will be having a garage sale this weekend in the Mayo Cafeteria. It is from 8 A.M. to 2 P.M.and benefits the 5th grade.  Please come out and see us!

-            Summer School enrollment has started, please check with the office for more information.

-            Please remember to return your home ‘n backs to the tubs in the cafeteria or the front lobby. Please make sure to get these returned every week before Thursday morning.  There is a tub in the office and one in the cafeteria where you can drop them.  Thanks so much!

-            Don’t forget to check the lost & found and the lunchbox table on a regular basis!

-            Dismissal Reminder – If you pick your student up, you should always enter through the North cafeteria door and exit through the South cafeteria door.  This allows for the safety of everyone and is not meant to inconvenience anyone.  Thanks for your cooperation and consideration.

Armstrong Program – The Armstrong Program is scheduled for Thursday, April 28th at 6:30PM. Students auditioned this week and rehearsal will begin next week. Every Armstrong will be expected to be involved in some form, whether it is working on props and scenery, making a playbill and advertising for the program or making the costumes. Much like enrichment, students will get to choose what they would like to work on and we will work to place them in groups to best fit their choice.

*We are asking for any and all donations of materials to help with costume-making, our show is Western themed*

State Testing – Our state testing window this year is Monday April 11th through Friday April 29th. Below are the days that we will be testing as a large group. We will be testing in the mornings, starting at 8:15/30. Please make sure that your child is on time to school during those days, gets good sleep the night before, and has a good breakfast the morning of.

-            Tuesday 4/12 – 4th Grade Reading (Part I)

-            Wednesday 4/13 – 4th Grade Reading (Part II)

-            Tuesday 4/26 – 5th Grade Science (Part I and II)

-            Wednesday 4/27 – 5th Grade Social Studies (Part I and II)

One of the things that we do in the Armstrong area to lift students’ spirits and take some pressure off of testing is write encouragement notes to our students. We also let students write letters of encouragement to each other and we love for parents to join in! This is nothing fancy; you can simply write a little note to let your child know that you are thinking about them on the day of the test. Before we test each day, we will let students read their notes. To make this process a little easier, we are going to have folders set up outside of Mrs. Smith’s room for you to place your letters in. There will be one set of folders for Hewitt, Najera and Moore homebases and one set of folders for Smith, Guss and Molina homebases. The folders will be labeled by test (ex. 4th Reading Pt. 1, 5thReading Pt. 1, 4th Math, etc.). Just put your letter in the folder of whichever test you are wanting to encourage your child on. If your child is a 4th grader, you will need to write 3 notes, as there are 3 days of testing. If your child is a 5thgrader, you will need to write 5 notes  as there are 5 days of testing. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Moore (mooreco2@tulsaschools.org) or Mrs. Smith (embryel@tulsaschools.org).

5th Grade Promotion – 5th Grade Promotion is scheduled for Thursday, May 12th at 6:30 PM. We will be holding the promotion in the Wilson Auditorium with more details to come closer to the day. What we are looking for right now are 4th Grade Parent Volunteers to help plan the after promotion celebration; so far we only have one! If you are willing to help plan this, please contact Mrs. Moore (mooreco2@tulsaschools.org) or Mrs. Smith (embryel@tulsaschools.org)

 IMPORTANT 5TH GRADE INFORMATION:

-Our last meeting is Tuesday April 26th at 6:30PM in Mrs. Moore’s area.

-Tomorrow is the LAST day to pay money for the trip.  If we do not get your money by tomorrow then your name will be taken off the list and your spot in the hotel will be removed.  Also, after tomorrow, you may not switch adults that will be accompanying your child.

-Don’t forget the garage sale this weekend!  We need volunteers either to help set up Friday evening around 5, or to help at the actual sale on Saturday. Contact Jessica Madison with any questions.

As always, if you have any questions please feel free to email your child’s homebase teacher, myself (embryel@tulsaschools.org) or Mrs. Moore (mooreco2@tulsaschools.org). Have a wonderful weekend!

We are SO PROUD of all of our Armstrongs who were able to attend our field study to Helmzar earlier this week.
