Email from the Principal

If you are a new family to Mayo, welcome.  If you are a returning family, welcome back.  We are excited about the beginning of the new school year.  I wanted to make you aware of a few important things before school begins tomorrow.

A few years ago Mayo began a new tradition on the first day of school.  All students will wait in the front of the school by the  flag pole.  We will have a brief flag raising ceremony, some introductions, etc. and then each instructional area will enter the building as a whole group.  Music will start at approximately 7:30AM and the ceremony will begin approximately at start time—at 7:45AM.   New Einstein parents are welcome to join the PTA for a BooHoo breakfast after you say goodbye to your child in the Einstein area.  In case of bad weather, we will following our normal morning routine, which is outlined below.

First, just a reminder that school begins at 7:45AM and ends at 2:50PM.  The doors will not be unlocked until 7:15AM.  Any student who is eating breakfast in the cafeteria will go straight to the cafeteria. All PK-2 students will wait in the cafeteria for school to begin, regardless if they are eating in the cafeteria or not.  Students in grades 3-5 will wait in the gym for school to start.  After breakfast, students in grades 3-5 should report to the gym.  If a  student in grades 3-5 is not eating breakfast, s/he should report immediately to the gym.

As most of you know, our schedule has changed this year.  We really need your help and patience during the first several days of school as we work out some logistics.  We also need your help in following procedures.

Morning drop off:  If you are bringing your child into the building, you will need to park in the Mayo parking lot or the church parking, which is located just across the street from our parking lot.  If you are  dropping off your child, drop off is in the  front of the building only.  You should see new signage first thing in the morning on Columbia Avenue.  Please pull up and drop off in one of the numbered spaces (1-4).  Once your child has gotten out of the car, please pull away so that other cars waiting can use one of the spots.  There will be adults outside to ensure your child makes it inside the building.  There is no parking in front of the school on Columbia Avenue.  Also, please do not drop off on 12th streetin front of the cafeteria.  This is extremely dangerous and it encourages others to ignore procedures which are designed to keep your child safe.

There is a new bus lane only on Columbia Avenue.  This is not a drop off lane for cars.  It was created to allow buses in the morning to pull out of traffic.  Please drop off only in front of the school.

Pick Up:  I’m going to ask for your patience as we work through our pickup procedures after school.  We really don’t know how many students will be in aftercare, how many will be picked up by daycare, etc.  In the meantime, we will continue pickup as we did last year.  You will need to come inside the Mayo cafeteria to pick up your children.  Einstein parents (PK and K) may wait in the library.  Once school is out, please go to the Einstein area to pick up your child.  There is no parking in front of the school.  This is for licensed day care providers and school buses only.

Again, I need to ask for your help in following procedures.  They are designed to minimize problems and to ensure student safety.  If you need anything or have questions in the morning, please come to the office.

Health Clinic:   I have attached some forms from our Health Clinic.  These were accidentally left off of the email that was sent with other forms.  Some of these forms are required for every student and some are only for students who have specific instructions for medications.
