Letter from the Principal

Dear Mayo Families:
I’m writing to make you aware of some upcoming date and time changes and to share some information with you. Some of this information has been shared previously, but some of it is new.
Saturday, August 13 is our second PTA work day. The building will be open from 9:00AM 2:00PM. I know many principals, teachers and district personnel who are amazed at the unique relationship between Mayo parents and our school. Your willingness to help us prepare for the year is something unique to Mayo. Please come, even for an hour or two. It’s a great opportunity for you to get to know teachers and other parents.
The annual Mayo Mingle will be held on Thursday, August 18. You will have an opportunity to find out your child’s Family Teacher, buy Mayo spirit wear, make a payment on the PTA Mayo Way Fee, review bus routes, fill out paperwork and socialize. Einstein families can begin to arrive at 5:30PM. Mayo Mingle begins at 6:30PM for all other families. We began this differentiated time last year so that new Einstein parents don’t feel so overwhelmed. The PTA will be sharing more information about the Mayo Mingle in the near future.
School begins Monday, August 22. Our school day is 8:00AM to 3:05PM. The building will remain locked until 7:30AM. Students may not be dropped off before then. Breakfast will be served from 7:30AM-7:55AM.
We will not be doing the traditional Home and Backs next year. All information that can be sent electronically will be. Over the last few years, fewer and fewer students returned their Home and Backs on a regular basis. This just made the process time consuming and burdensome. When you return to school, please make sure that the office staff has your current email address and is informed when it changes.
We try very hard to communicate with Mayo families on a regular basis via several methodsemail, School Connects, Facebook, Twitter, SchoolWay, PeachJar and the monthly PTA newsletter.
You can connect with SchoolWay or PeachJar by visiting our website at mayo.tulsaschools.org. Follow us on Twitter @Mayo_PTA or Facebook.com/mayodemonstrationschool. Information sent via School Connects is sent based on the email address in PowerSchool. Please note: There are two Facebook pages associated with Mayo. The PTA page is the official page and is the only one monitored by the school. Information shared on any other Facebook page may not be accurate.
The office staff will report back to work on Monday, August 8. Teachers do not report back to work until August 16, but they will be in district required training and meetings most of this time.
Some of you may have seen press reports about the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). This year, all elementary level students at TPS are eligible to receive both breakfast and lunch free of charge under the CEP. Below are some FAQs about the CEP.
What is the Community Eligibility Provision?
The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) is part of the 2010 Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act. The CEP allows schools and districts with high poverty rates to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students.
Families at participating schools do not need to complete free and reduced meal applications.
Which district schools will participate in the CEP?
All elementary schools will use the CEP in the 2016-2017 school year. We no longer need to track student status (free, reduced or paid), although we will continue track student participation by name on a day-to-day basis.
I hope youve had a great summer and enjoy the last few weeks. Please stay tuned for more information and more details as it becomes available.
Kenneth Joslin
Principal
