Armstrong Update 2-11-2016

Greetings Armstrong Parents!

Wow!  The kids had so much fun at Biztown this week!  I am sure they came home talking about it.  It truly was such a unique and wonderful experience and we really appreciate all the extra work our volunteers did to make it happen; thank you volunteers!  We are so glad we went! Now that Biztown is over we are on to the next adventure in the Armstrong area, which is our overnight next week and Living Museum in March.  Please see below for information and pay special attention to the information in bold.  If you have any questions, please email your child’s homebase teacher, Mrs. Moore (mooreco2@tulsaschools.org) or Mrs. Smith (embryel@tulsaschools.org).

FYIs and Reminders:

-          The Rocking Raccoons will be leading our Celebrations this Friday at 8:00 A.M.

-          Summer School enrollment has started, please check with the office for more information.

-          Please remember to return your home ‘n backs to the tubs in the cafeteria or the front lobby. Please make sure to get these returned every week before Thursday morning.  There is a tub in the office and one in the cafeteria where you can drop them.  Thanks so much!

-          Don’t forget to check the lost & found and the lunchbox table on a regular basis!

-          Another 5th Grade babysitting night is coming up just in time for Valentine’s Day! See the attached information on how to sign up your child for a fun night at Mayo to help support our 5th grade and so you can have a night out! We need more people to sign up! Please consider helping the 5th grade!

-          Dismissal Reminder – If you pick your student up, you should always enter through the North cafeteria door and exit through the South cafeteria door.  This allows for the safety of everyone and is not meant to inconvenience anyone.  Thanks for your cooperation and consideration.

Overnight in OKC – Our Armstrong overnight (for all Armstrongs) is quickly approaching as well.  If you sent in a form saying you were coming and wanted to help, Mrs. Smith should have sent you an e-mail.  If not, then you need to e-mail Mrs. Smith and let her know you want to help.  If you said you were coming and you wanted to ride the bus please e-mail Mrs. Smith ASAP as well.  We have a limited number of seats and want to make sure everyone has transportation.

The teachers will be deciding on what exactly needs to be brought (and worn) on the overnight and we will send out the information next week.

If you have a cooler that the Armstrongs could borrow for our overnight we would greatly appreciate it! If you can, please e-mail Mrs. Moore or Mrs. Smith.

We will not be returning to Mayo until 4:30 on Friday the 19th; if your child rides the bus please make other arrangements to have them picked up at this time.

These overnights wouldn’t happen without all the awesome support we get from parents, but we do ask that siblings stay home.  Thanks for all you do!

Living Museum – Living Museum assignments were handed out before break and all students were given a day to work on research this week.  We will be setting aside other research/work time in our classes in the upcoming weeks, however; research outside of school if also encouraged if you are able, but not required.

Since we are getting closer to Living Museum time I have attached information on costumes. The costumes can be as elaborate as you want, but simple will work too, as long as it reflects that time period.  You do not need to go out and by an expensive costume either; I have attached information on how to create costumes from that time period using things you can find at the thrift store or in your closet. Also, I have had a few parents e-mail and ask to get their student’s person changed.  We told everyone from the beginning that we wouldn’t be doing any switching; however, if your student was given a person of the opposite gender and you do not feel comfortable letting them dress like that gender, then we have a solution.  We told the students that they may dress as someone from that time period and be an “interpreter” for their character.  They will still be wearing period clothing, but it can be clothing to reflect their gender.  Since the Living Museum is coming up on March 4th, getting started now will ensure less stress the week of the museum.

This project will culminate in a presentation and a five paragraph essay that will be written in your child’s literacy class. For the presentation your child will be required to make a tri-fold poster (this will be completed at school) and they will also be required to dress up as their person (this will be completed at home). The Living Museum Presentations will be held on March 4th. There will be a schedule sent home of times beforehand and we are encouraging all parents to come and visit if they are able. Please let Mrs. Moore or Mrs. Smith know if you have any questions.
