Armstrong Update 1-5-2016

Dear Armstrong Families,

Welcome back from what was hopefully a relaxing winter break! Can you believe we are already halfway through the school year? We are excited to announce that our new Armstrong teacher, Julia Tandy, will be joining us this coming Monday, January 9th!

As you may have heard from your child after school, we made a few changes to our homebases and math classes today. With the arrival of our new teacher, we thought it best to move around a few students from each homebase. We will spend our time in homebase this week writing class agreements and reviewing procedures, as well as making new tribe groups.

We also made the decision as a team, along with Mr. Joslin, to follow the model set by the literacy classes and split our math classes into grade level groups. These changes will result in one or both of the following for your child:
Your child may have changed math teachers today – Mrs. Smith will now teach the 5th grade math classes and Ms. Tandy will teach the 4th grade math classes.
All Armstrongs will now be with the same group of students for both their math and literacy classes. We hope this provides for less transition and more consistency in student groupings.

This decision was not made lightly, but with deliberate and thoughtful consideration. We believe that due to the inconsistencies in math instruction this school year that this change is one which is in the best interest of all students. We apologize if the changes caught you off-guard; please let your child’s homebase teacher know if you have any questions and/or concerns. If your child is in Ms. Tandy’s class, feel free to email Mrs. Smith with any questions or concerns.

OTHER IMPORTANT ARMSTRONG INFORMATION:

- Armstrong Enrichment Classes – During the 2nd quarter, we had time set aside for fun enrichment classes that involved learning beyond the required curriculum. We will be postponing the startup of these classes until the February as we have several Monday’s during January that not all of the staff will be here and able to facilitate with these classes.

- Mayo Trivia Night Saturday January 28th – Look for information coming home with your child today about signing up for this awesome even to help raise money for the Mayo Foundation!

- 5th Grade Pancake Breakfast – more details to follow in next week’s newsletter. Look for an informational flyer for your 5th grader to being home today. Flyer is attached to the email as well.

5th GRADE PARENTS – PLEASE READ BELOW:

The deadline to apply for middle school magnet programs is Friday, January 20. Although Mayo students have an automatic "in" to Thoreau, you must still complete the application process by the deadline or your spot will be forfeited.

I checked with the enrollment office today and was told that 27 students have submitted completed applications and 9 students have incomplete applications. That leaves 25 students who have not begun the online application process. You can begin the process at www.tulsaschools.org/enroll.

Mrs. Baumgarten has offered to host an event to assist anyone who may need help. She will be available next Thursday, January 12 at 6:30PM in the computer lab. You will need to bring a drivers license and a recent utility bill with your current address. These must be scanned and uploaded with your application.

If you are interested in attending, please call her and let her know. She can be reached at 918.925.1504. If no one responds by the end of the school day on Wednesday, January 11, we will cancel the event.
