Armstrong Update 1-21

Greetings Armstrong Parents!

I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend!  We have a plethora of activities lined up for the coming weeks so please read through this entire letter. Crystal Bridges is NEXT WEEK!!! As always, if you have any questions please email your child’s homebase teacher, Mrs. Moore, or myself.

Some FYIs:

-              Reminder: during dismissal, if you pick your student up, you should always enter through the North cafeteria door and exit through the South cafeteria door.  This allows for the safety of everyone and is not meant to inconvenience anyone.  Thanks for your cooperation and consideration.

-              Another reminder: there is NO GUM allowed at school.  Please don’t allow your students to bring it.  It is coming to school and being passed around and we would appreciate it if you could talk to your student about this please.

-              Please remember to return your home ‘n backs to the tubs in the cafeteria or the front lobby. Any items that need to be returned have your students give to their homeroom teacher.

-              Don’t forget to check the lost & found and the lunchbox table on a regular basis!

-              Don’t forget that our Mayo Trivia night is this coming Saturday January 23, 2016 at the Campbell Hotel. It is a SOLD OUT event and we are looking forward to seeing you there!

-              Friendship Party Candy Gram Sales start next week! See the attached flyer for information on when, where and how to buy candy grams.

-              Another 5th Grade babysitting night is coming up just in time for Valentine’s Day! See the attached information on how to sign up your child for a fun night at Mayo to help support our 5th grade and so you can have a night out!

Crystal Bridges –

January 28th- Hewitt, Moore, Najera

January 29th- Molina, Smith, Guss

Our next Field Study is coming up at the end of January and we are very excited! We will be traveling to Bentonville, Arkansas to visit the Crystal Bridges Museum in our triad homebase groups.  We will be taking a blue bus and leaving as close to 7:45 as we can and returning before the end of the day.  We encourage parents to attend this trip; in fact, each triad needs at least 3 more adults to accompany us; parent admittance is free. Thank you to those of you who volunteered to join us on this trip, if you plan on coming and have not emailed Mrs. Moore or Mrs. Smith, please do so ASAP.

In preparation for our visit to Crystal Bridges Museum next Thursday and Friday, we will be talking about nudity in art. We plan on introducing this topic to the students as a large group and we have prepared a powerpoint to show the students with a short description of each piece. We will be showing the powerpoint to the Armstrongs tomorrow, Friday January 22nd. The powerpoint is attached for your reference. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

-We have been given some new helpful information that we would like to pass onto you before our trip:

•             If you are a parent attending the trip you have 3 options for transportation: you may ride the bus (but our space is very limited and will not accommodate every volunteer), you can drive yourself, or you can carpool.  If you are driving your own vehicle then you will need to precede the bus so you do not get stuck in security.  If you arrive significantly later than the bus then you will be stuck in security for some time.  You can either meet at school and leave right before us or you may meet us there, but be sure to be there as close to 10 A.M. as you can.

•             All adults attending will need to bring their own lunches- please do not plan on buying lunch there; we do not make any purchases on field studies so no one will need cash

•             The museum will be providing sandwiches, chips, and water for the students; if your child has a food allergy please pack a lunch for them and let their homebase teacher know

•             Make sure your child has a coat that day to wear on the bus

•             Students will need to be in their regular uniforms

Biztown –

February 8th: Najera, Hewitt, Moore Homebases

February 9th: Smith, Guss, Molina Homebases

We officially have all of the parent volunteers that are needed for both triads. Thank you so much to all those who have volunteered, we really appreciate your help! You child should be receiving their job placement by the end of next week or the first of February. We are enjoying teaching the curriculum and the students are having a great time learning about real life money management. We held mayoral elections in each homebase last week and the winners of those elections are now campaigning to be elected Mayor for their triad. All of the candidates in the homebase runoff showed great courage getting up and speaking in front of their classmates and we saw some amazing displays of support and encouragement from those who did not win in their homebase for those who did. Good luck to the remaining candidates, you are doing an awesome job with your campaigns!

If you received confirmation about volunteering at Biztown, you will need to visit https://www.juniorachievement.org/web/ja-ok/ja-biztown-volunteer for your required training before the day of the field study.  If you cannot accomplish this before then please contact a teacher and they can help you.

We started our Job Interviews this week and it was a great success!!! Students from Mrs. Moore and Mr. Najera Homebases interviewed yesterday and we had great feedback from the interviewers. We also loved seeing the students in their interview clothes! We are excited to continue the interview process next week as well. The remaining homebases will be interviewing as follows:

•             Monday PM – Hewitt Homebase

•             Tuesday PM – Smith Homebase

•             Wednesday PM – Molina, Guss, and remainder of Smith Homebase

On these days we will allow the students who are interviewing to wear business casual/church best attire that follows the regular TPS dress code.  If they do not have the proper clothes then they need to wear their uniforms; this is not a free dress day and your child will only need to dress up on their interview day.  They will wear these clothes all day so you might want to send an extra pair of shoes to wear to recess or Healthy Lifestyles.

Living Museum – Living Museum assignments were handed out and students began their research before the Winter Break. We will be putting our research on hold until after our visit to JA Biztown and then we will begin back in full swing. All students will have ample amount of time in their year-long theme class rotation to research their assigned person, however; research outside of school if also encouraged if you are able, but not required.

This project will culminate in a presentation and a five paragraph essay that will be written in your child’s literacy class. For the presentation your child will be required to make a tri-fold poster (this will be completed at school) and they will also be required to dress up as their person (this will be completed at home). There will be more details coming home about costume requirements the closer we get to our presentations. The Living Museum Presentations will be held on March 4th. There will be a schedule sent home of times beforehand and we are encouraging all parents to come and visit if they are able. Please let Mrs. Moore or Mrs. Smith know if you have any questions.

Overnight in OKC- Our Armstrong overnight (for all Armstrongs) is quickly approaching as well.  We will be going to OKC on February 18th and 19th.  We have just finished nailing down all the details and will send home information very soon, but keep in mind that we encourage and appreciate any adults that can attend; in fact, these overnights wouldn’t happen without all the awesome support we get from parents.

In your home and back last week was an Armstrong T-Shirt order form for the parents only; please send back the order form by January 29th, 2016, it is attached to this e-mail if you need it again. We always wear our shirts on the second day of the trip, and student shirts are free of cost to everyone because we include them in our Armstrong Budget.

We will be sending a form home next week to see which parents are planning on attending and what activities they are going to attend. We will also be looking for parent volunteers (we need as many as possible) to help with the preparation. Look for form in next week’s home and back.
