Goodall Update 1-7-16

January 7, 2015

Welcome Back!  We hope everyone had a relaxing break.  There are lots of exciting things happening in the Goodall area.  During this first week back, we are “getting back in the groove” and reviewing our Mayo procedures.  Please review school procedures with your child.

Over the next few weeks, we have several activities planned.  See below for more details.

Cogat Testing- All of the Shoots (2nd graders) will be administered the Cogat test next week January 12th-14th. The test measures reasoning and problem solving skills in the areas of 1) verbal, 2) quantitative (mathematics), 3) spatial or non-verbal (using shapes and figures to solve problems). The test will be given in your child’s Literacy class and will be broken down into 3 sections.  We will be showing them examples of the questions before we begin.

See attached document for further explanation.

Bubble-ology-Coming up quickly is the extension of our Solids and Liquids unit.  We will dedicate a week to a GEMS event called Bubble-ology! During this event we set up centers that promote the discovery of properties of bubbles through investigation and play.  We will be making predictions, observations, and conclusions based upon our experiences with many types of bubbles and solutions throughout the week.   Look for our demonstration of some of these activities during student-led conferences in March!

We will need a few volunteers for these activites.  Please contact your homebase teacher if you would like to help.

Trivia Night- The 5th Annual Mayo Trivia Night is Saturday, January 23!  There is a registration form in this week’s Home and Back.  Trivia Night sells out, so act fast!  Trivia Night is hosted by the Mayo Foundation and they use the funds they raise on this to finance the annual Mayo staff retreat.  We hope you will get a team of six together to participate in this fun event at the Campbell Hotel!

100th Day of School-The 100th day of school is approaching quickly.  Barring any snow days, it will be on Tuesday, February 2nd.  We will doing activities related to the number 100.  We do need some parent volunteers to help with the 100 day snacks.  More information will be provided in the weeks to follow.

Remember to return your home ‘n backs to the tubs in the cafeteria or the front lobby. The home and back committee needs them!
