Armstrong Update: 10-1-2015

Greetings Armstrong Parents!

Don’t forget that the Curious Cats Family is on stage Friday for Celebrations!

Mayo Reads Millions is starting soon! Please see the attachment for more information.

5th Grade Chocolate sales have started! See the attached flier for information on how to pick up your chocolates from Mrs. Mattox.

Don’t forget that we have a 5th Grade Garage Sale this Saturday October 3rd! Although this Garage Sale is manned by our 5th graders we would love for you to spread the word to family and friends so that we can have as many customers as we can get. The garage sale will be from 8-2.

Please read carefully because we have added some new information and dates!

Early Release Friday and Spirit Day – Don’t forget that tomorrow is the first Friday of the month which means that it is Mayo Spirit Day and Early Release Friday! For those who are new to Mayo, Spirit Day occurs on the first Friday of every month and it is an opportunity for students to wear Mayo spirit t-shirts that have been purchased at the Spirit store or ones they have received from past field studies and overnights. Spirit shirts must be worn with uniform bottoms (pants, shorts, skirts), not jeans. This is not a free dress day and if your child is out of uniform compliance they will be sent to the office to call home for a change of clothes.

Early Release times have changes slightly from last year because of our start and end times changing. The new Early Release time for Mayo is 1:00PM. Please be sure that you have made arrangements for your child to be picked up or ride the bus as all students will be dismissed at 1PM tomorrow.

School Picture Day – Next Tuesday, October 6th, is Picture Day. This is a uniform picture day and all students are expected to be in their Mayo uniform. Pictures will be taken in the morning. In your home and backs you will find school picture order forms. Please return these to the office or your child’s homebase teacher by Tuesday.

Tulsa Ballet for 5th Grade – Today the 5th graders attended the Any Given Child field study to the Tulsa Ballet. The Tulsa Ballet offers free tickets to 5th grade students in TPS who have attended this field study and we are fortunate enough to have some tickets available for Mayo students. The students must go to the ballet accompanied by an adult, so those who are interested will receive 2 tickets, one for you and one for your child. We have a limited number of tickets to give away so this will be on a first come, first served basis. There are going to be several other ballets throughout the year, the first one is The Taming of the Shrewon October 22nd, so if you cannot make this one there will be other opportunities coming up J If you are interested please email Mrs. Smith or Mrs. Moore.

Home and Backs – Home and Backs come home on Thursdays (today)!  We have a lot of Armstrongs who are forgetting to return their home and back envelopes. Please make sure to have your child return their envelope promptly. The home and back committee puts a lot of time and effort into these and we really appreciate their dedication and hard work.

Miles for Mayo Jog-a-thon – One more week until Miles for Mayo-Made in the Shade!  Our jog-a-thon is next Friday, October 9.  The Armstrong area will jog at 8:30 and will be done around 9:15.  We would love to have parents come cheer us on!  Mayo students may wear athletic pants or shorts (weather and school appropriate) for the day.  Everyone will get a new Miles for Mayo shirt!  Please make sure your child has the correct footwear for jogging. All pledge envelopes should be returned to school on the day of the event. Any direct donations that you have already collected will be removed and tallied, the envelope will be marked with the number of laps run, and the envelope will be returned for additional donations. Thanks for your support!

Student Led Conferences – I can’t believe it, but our Fall Student-Led conferences are just around the corner! At Mayo, we have student-led conferences; it is an opportunity for your child to show you what they have been learning in their classes. Our conferences this year will be held on Monday, Oct. 12th and Tuesday, Oct. 13th. Come to the Armstrong area between 3:15 and 5:45 to have your child lead your through their classes and talk with their teachers about any questions or concerns you may have.

Armstrong Schedule – There has been a slight change in the Armstrong schedule; this change affects the afternoon classes only. Instead of students rotating daily through their Science, Social Studies and Year-Long Theme classes, they will be rotating weekly. We are hoping that with this change in schedule the students will get a more concentrated time in each class.

Literacy Homework – Remember that homework is due October 9th, 2015. The students need to read their novel in its entirety and complete ONE choice board option. The novel should be returned on the due date. Please email Mrs. Hewitt, Mr. Najera or Mr. Guss if you have any questions. Remember if the book is lost you and your student are responsible for obtaining a copy for our student to complete their homework and the lost book will need to be replaced.

Science Homework - Science homework is changing with the change in the schedule.  Students will receive their assigned pages on the Friday of their science week and they will be due the Monday of their next science week. Essentially they will have 2 weeks to complete the work. We are working on getting books for the few students that do not have them yet. Please refer any questions to Mrs. Hewitt or Mr. Guss. The current homework due: 4th grade will need to do pages 255-259 and 260-265 and 5th grade will do pages 185-186 and 192-197.

Social Studies Homework – Please be checking your emails regularly for information about Social Studies homework from your child’s Social Studies teacher.

TASM Field Study – The field study to the Tulsa Air and Space Museum is coming up on October 26th (it will be here before you know it!).  We aren’t sure of a time yet, but would love parents to come with us.  We also aren’t sure if parents will need to pay or not, but if they do, the maximum expense would be $8 and we would need everyone to drive themselves (or carpool).  Once again, as we get closer to this date I will send home more information.  Attached is a release form required by the Tulsa Air and Space Museum (TASM). Please fill out and send back ASAP. It should also be coming home as a hard copy in this week’s home and back.

Helmzar Ropes Course Field Study – We sent home a hard copy of the Helmzar release form in home and backs last week, there is a copy attached in case it has been misplaced. Please fill this out and return to Mrs. Moore or Mrs. Smith. Although this field study isn’t until after Spring Break (March 21st and 22nd), we would like to get the release forms returned ASAP.

Armstrong Overnight – Don’t forget that our Armstrong Overnight is scheduled for February 18th and 19th in Oklahoma City. This is our big field study for the year and although it isn’t a requirement, a majority of the parents come.  We really appreciate parental support on these trips and would love for everyone to come who can.  Your child is encouraged to come even if you cannot because there will be plenty of adults and this trip is a direct tie-in with our curriculum. As we get closer to this time we will be sending out more details.

Reminders:
- Gum and candy are not allowed at Mayo (unless you have a teacher’s permission or it is consumed only in the Cafeteria at lunchtime).

- If your child brings their cellphone to school, please remind them to leave it with Mrs. Jennings in the front office.

The dates scheduled are December 8th (Moore, Hewitt, Najera) and December 9th(Smith, Guss, Molina). Look for more details to come.

As always, if you have any questions please feel free to email your child’s homebase teacher, myself (mooreco2@tulsaschools.org) or Mrs. Smith (embryel@tulsaschools.org). I hope everyone has a great weekend!
