Armstrong Update 10-22

Greetings Armstrong Parents!

Thank you to everyone who attended our fall conferences last week! I can’t believe that we are already into the second quarter of the year. I hope that everyone had a nice and relaxing fall break. We have a lot going on at Mayo and in the Armstrong area right now, don’t forget to read carefully because there is some very important information about Monday’s upcoming field study, as well as updates on the Jog-a-Thon fundraiser, Fall Parties and the Fall Carnival.

Some FYIs:

- Since the Einsteins are leaving for their Field Study first thing tomorrow morning, there will not be a Celebrations assembly for awarding Miles for Mayo fund raising prizes.  This means that the Electric Eel family will not be on stage as was originally printed in the Mayo Times.

This also means that you have some more time to collect pledges and get your envelopes back to school. The new deadline for returning envelopes is Monday, October 26. We will award prizes on Friday, October 30.There are extra pledge envelopes in the office, or you can make your own. Checks should be payable to Mayo Foundation. We still have a way to go to make our goal.

 - Please remember to return your home ‘n backs to the tubs in the cafeteria or the front lobby. Any items that need to be returned have your students give to their homeroom teacher.

- 5th Grade Chocolate sales have started! The 5th graders are selling chocolate for $1 apiece before and after school.

- Family parties are coming up!!! If you have signed up to help at parties you should’ve received an e-mail from Marissa Douthit; if not you can e-mail her at:mayofamilyparent@aol.com

- If you were unable to attend conferences and would like to meet with your child’s teachers, please feel free to email them to set up a meeting after school. Also at the conference you and your child had the opportunity to sign an ipledge5 postcard to ensure we are working together for a successful year for your child. If you did not sign one of these and would like to, please Click on the link and make your Parent Promise.

Please read carefully because we have added some new information and dates!

TASM Field Study – The field study to the Tulsa Air and Space Museum is this coming Monday! We will be leaving Mayo at 9:00 and arriving at the Tulsa Air and Space Museum about 9:30. Once we arrive at the museum we will split into 2 groups, half will explore the museum and the other half will watch a show in the planetarium and then we will switch. We should be wrapped up at the TASM by noon. We will then go to Mohawk Park/Oxley Nature Center for lunch. We should be back to Mayo by 2:00.

We would love to have parent attend this field study, however; there is an admission cost to both the museum andthe planetarium. Admission to each part (museum and planetarium) is $7.50 each. This means that if you plan on attending this field study with your child then it will be a total of $15 for your admission to both

If you plan on attending with your child please email your child’s homebase teacher ASAP. If you cannot make it to the museum/planetarium feel free to join us for lunch at Mohawk around 12:15!

Attached is a release form required by the Tulsa Air and Space Museum (TASM). Please fill out and send back ASAP. Students who have not yet turned it in will be receiving another one from their homebase teacher today. If this is not returned then your child will not be able to attend.

Mayo Application Window and Tour Dates – The application window for PK students opens on Monday, November 9.  Applications should be available online at that date.  Parents should visit http://www.tulsaschools.org/enroll for additional information.  Incoming PK students of current Mayo students receive sibling preference.  However, you MUST still complete the online application by the deadline on Friday, January 15.  Existing parents will need to obtain a letter from Mr. Joslin before submitting the application.  The lottery will be held on Wednesday, February 4at Thoreau at 6:00PM.  You do not have to be present.  Notification letters are scheduled to be sent out Thursday, February 11.

Potential Pre-K parents must attend a tour of Mayo and obtain a letter signed by Mr. Joslin, which indicates that the parent attended the tour.  Tour dates have been scheduled for:

Wednesday, November 18 @ 8:30AM

Thursday, December 3 @ 8:30AM

Thursday, December 10 @ 8:30AM

Wednesday, December 16 @ 8:30AM

Wednesday, January 6 @ 8:30AM

Thursday, January 14 @ 6:00PM

We will be conducting separate tours for parents who are interested in any available slots for K-5 for next school year.  The window for these applications is Monday, April 4 – Friday, April 22.  We have not yet scheduled those tours.

Fall Carnival!!! – Our Fall Carnival is coming up Friday October 30th from 6:30-8:30PM. This is something that the 5th graders organize to raise money for their end of the year trip and it is open to all Mayo friends and families. I have attached a flyer with more information about admissions, ticket sales and activities. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Tulsa Ballet for 5th Grade – In a previous email we had offered free tickets to the Tulsa Ballet to 5th grade students and parents. Unfortunately, due to lack of funding, these tickets are no longer available.

Science Homework – Don’t forget that science homework is changing with the change in the schedule.  Students will receive their assigned pages on the Friday of their science week and they will be due the Monday of their next science week. Essentially they will have 2 weeks to complete the work. We are working on getting books for the few students that do not have them yet. Please refer any questions to Mrs. Hewitt or Mr. Guss. The current homework due: 4th grade will need to do pages 255-259 and 260-265 and 5th grade will do pages 185-186 and 192-197.

Social Studies Homework – Please be checking your emails regularly for information about Social Studies homework from your child’s Social Studies teacher.

Literacy Homework - All literacy classes except Read 180 will be getting a new novel sent home next week for homework. We are excited for the homework this year, we had about 90% complete and turn in the homework! This is awesome but we strive for 100%. If you notice your student still has the previous novel please have them return it or they will be responsible for supplying their own novel next week. If you have any questions please contact your students  Literacy Teacher. hewitna@tulsaschools.orggussal@tulsaschools.orgnajerhu@tulsaschools.org

IMPORTANT 5TH GRADE INFORMATION:
- WE NEED EVERY FIFTH GRADER TO DONATE ONE BAG OF MIXED/VARIETY CANDY FOR THE FALL CARNIVAL AND FOR FALL PARTIES CANDY-GRAMS, if you have not already done so. PLEASE TAKE THESE BAGS TO MRS. MOORE OR MRS. SMITH. Thank you to those that have brought them!!!

- The 5th grade Carnival is coming up next Friday Oct. 30thA sign-up sheet for the carnival (both a student and parent one) was sent home with home n’ backs today.  Please fill this out and send it back to school ASAP. We need as many 5th graders and parents to help as we can get!

- 5th Grade Trip Fundraising Meeting – Our next meeting will be Wednesday, November 4th at 6:30PM in Mrs. Moore’s area. We will be discussing upcoming fundraisers and possible trip dates. If you are unable to make it and have any ideas, please email Mrs. Moore (mooreco2@tulsaschools.org), Mr. Guss (gussal@tulsaschools.org) and Mrs. Smith (embryel@tulsaschools.org).

5TH GRADE Thoreau Shadow Dates and Applications – We have specific dates set aside for the 5th grade Armstrongs to shadow at Thoreau in December. These dates are December 8th and 9th.  If your child’s homebase teacher is Mr. Najera, Mrs. Hewitt, or Mrs. Moore then you need to sign up for the 8th.  If your child is in one of the other 3 homebases then you need to sign up for the 9th. The purpose of these days is for the 5th graders to have a chance to “shadow” a Thoreau student and participate in what would be a “typical” day in 6th grade; you must contact Thoreau to reserve your child’s spot (this is for your child only.  If you wish to tour with your child those must be set up separately). Your child will be spending all day at Thoreau and will need to be dropped off in the morning.  All Mayo students have an automatic “in” into Thoreau for their 6th grade year, however; you will still need to fill out an application and return it to the ESC during the application window. The application process for the 2016-2017 school year opens at midnight Monday, November 9, 2015 and will be available on the TPS website.

As always, if you have any questions please feel free to email your child’s homebase teacher, Mrs. Moore (mooreco2@tulsaschools.org) or myself (embryel@tulsaschools.org). I hope everyone has a great weekend!
