Edison Update 10-22

Good afternoon,

We had a nice field study to downtown Tulsa Tuesday.  The Woody Guthrie Center is a wonderful museum and they are always such gracious hosts!  If you have never had a chance to visit it, please do so.  Your child will be able to show you some of the amazing things they have on display and I'm sure they would like to explore the museum in further depth.  We also had a visit from City Councilor Ewing while we were at the Guthrie Green.  Since our current curriculum involved the "Power of a Community," he spoke about the revitalization of downtown Tulsa and how it helps our community.  He challenged the students with this question.  "How could you help your community even if you did not have much money?"  He also is interested in hearing from our students about what they would like to see downtown when they are about ten years older.  You might talk to your child about these questions.  We will be writing to Mr. Ewing and it would be great if they had some ideas.

The fifth graders are hosting a Fall Carnival next Friday!  Please see the attached flyer for all of the important information.

There have been some updates to the Million Word Reader Program.  These changes involve how chapter books are logged.  Please see the flyer in the Home and Back for details.

The following is a very important note from Mr. Joslin regarding admission to Mayo for next year.

The application window for PK students opens on Monday, November 9.  Applications should be available online at that date.  Parents should visithttp://www.tulsaschools.org/enroll for additional information.  Incoming PK students of current Mayo students receive sibling preference.  However, you MUST still complete the online application by the deadline on  Friday, January 15.  Existing parents will need to obtain a letter from Mr. Joslin before submitting the application.  You should also email Mrs. Jennings in the office and let her know the name of the sibling applying. (jenniga@tulsaschools.org)  The lottery will be held on Wednesday, February 4 at Thoreau at 6:00PM.  You do not have to be present.  Notification letters are scheduled to be sent out Thursday, February 11.

New parents must attend a tour of Mayo and obtain a letter signed by Mr. Joslin, which indicates that the parent attended the tour.  These tours are for adults only.  Please call the office (918-925-1500) to reserve a spot at one of the following tours:

Wednesday, November 18 @ 8:30AM

Thursday, December 3 @ 8:30AM

Thursday, December 10 @ 8:30AM

Wednesday, December 16 @ 8:30AM

Wednesday, January 6 @ 8:30AM

Thursday, January 14 @ 6:00PM

We will be conducting separate tours for parents who are interested in any available slots for K-5 for next school year.  The window for these applications is Monday, April 4 – Friday, April 22.  We have not yet scheduled those tours.

Since the Einsteins are leaving for their Field Study first thing tomorrow morning, there will not be a Celebrations assembly for awarding Miles for Mayo fund raising prizes.  So, you have some more time to collect pledges and get your envelopes back to school.  The new deadline for returning envelopes is Monday, October 26th.  We will award prizes on Friday, October 30th.  There are extra pledge envelopes in the office, or you can make your own.  Checks should be payable to Mayo Foundation.  We still have a way to go to make our goal.

Thanks for reading and have a nice weekend!
