Armstrong Update 9-26-2016

Greetings Armstrong Parents!

First and foremost I would like to apologize for the tardiness of this newsletter. I hope that everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing weekend. The weather finally feels like it’s turning to fall, we’ll see if it lasts… 

A few things have come up in the Armstrong Area over the last week that we would like to address and ask that you follow up with your child. The first of these is the school Fire Drill that we had last week. This fire drill was not the first drill of this school year, nor was it the first fire drill of the school year. We have also practiced a Tornado Drill and an Intruder on Campus (IOC) drill this year as well. Previous to last week’s drill, the drills we’ve had this year have gone very smoothly with students following procedures, taking the drills seriously and listening to and following instructions. Unfortunately I cannot say the same for last week’s fire drill. After the drill we had to bring the students back and talk with them as a whole group and practice the drill again. This second attempt was a little more successful, but not great. We discussed the importance of these drills and why we have them. We are required to have these drills routinely throughout the school year as to make sure that students as well as the staff understand the procedures and have a chance to practice in case an actual emergency happens. Please talk with your child about the importance of these drills and following procedures for their safety.

The other thing that we would like to bring to your attention is gum in the Armstrong area. Gum is not allowed at school and we ask that you do not send gum to school with your child. At the end of the day today, gum was found ground into the carpet in our large group area where we meet as a whole Armstrong group and it was also found by a substitute (a guest to our area!) stuck on several classroom chairs. Unfortunately the substitute did not see the gum and sat down on it and left school today with it stuck to her skirt. We try to send the message in the Armstrong area that we are all part of a community and it is important for everyone to respect not only each other, but our shared property as well. Please talk with your child about this and the importance of respecting our school property as well as guest teachers in our classrooms.

Strings and Band – While we are still trying to obtain all of the instruments needed for the band program, we will be starting band this week. Since our strings and band class switch every day we will be posting the weekly schedule for these classes in a common place in the Armstrong area as well as making sure to keep you updated through the weekly newsletter. The schedule through Friday Oct. 7th is as follows:
•    Monday Sept. 26 – Band
•    Tuesday Sept. 27 – Strings
•    Wednesday Sept. 28 – Band
•    Thursday Sept. 29 – Strings
•    Friday Sept. 30 – Band
•    Monday Oct. 3 – Strings
•    Tuesday Oct. 4 – Band
•    Wednesday Oct. 5 – Strings
•    Thursday Oct. 6 – Band
•    Friday Oct. 7 – NO SCHOOL (Teacher Professional Day)

Math Update – All Armstrong students are in the process of being set up with an account on www.prodigygame.com. This is a website that allows the students to log in and practice math at home if they would like, and it also tracks student work so that their math teacher is able to keep track of their progress. The students have been using their accounts during our center time; half of the Armstrongs have logged in during class time and the other half will do so next week. We encourage your child to play this game at home for extra practice. We will be sending home their log in information this week.

Armstrong Typing Update - Armstrongs have been practicing their typing with games.  They can continue to practice at home if they wish.  The website is mayo.tulsaschools.org.
Select the Library tab.  Then choose TPS Typing Resources to the left of the screen.  A list of games will pull up.  If they practice at home, ask that they keep their fingers in the home key positions.

With cursive, some kids are choosing to bring home extra cursive sheets to practice.  This is not a required homework.

Important Reminders
-    Armstrong after school dismissal/pick-up is on the playground at the newly painted map of the United States. Please make sure to sign your child out with their homebase teacher (Mrs. Smith’s homebase will be with Mrs. Lyles). If there is inclement weather, the Armstrongs will wait for pick-up in their area upstairs. We appreciate your patience and flexibility with the new dismissal procedures.

-    Cell phones are not allowed in the Armstrong Area. While we understand the need for your child to have a cell phone with them for contact with after school activities, we require all cell phones to be checked in with Mrs. Jennings in the mornings before class. She will keep them safe during the day so they will not become a distraction. Please remind your child(ren) of this policy if they carry a cell phone to school with them. Thank you for your cooperation!
