Armstrong Update 9-8-2016

Greetings Armstrong Parents!

As we near the end of the third week of school, we are now settling into our different classes, our homebases and our daily schedules. We hope that everyone had a long and relaxing Labor Day weekend, because we are back in gear and rolling in the Armstrong area. In our math classes this week, we have been looking at different fractional parts of a whole as well as beginning to review place value, rounding, and addition and subtraction algorithms. In our literacy classes this week we have been focusing on figurative language, similes and metaphors. All literacy and math classes have also started center rotations which the students are very much enjoying.

Changes to Our Schedule – We have moved our recess time from 1:00PM to 11:00AM. Recess will still be 15 minutes. The reason for the move is because we noticed that students were in class for a long stretch of time between specials and lunch and we wanted them to have an opportunity to get in some movement in between their math and reading rotations.

Strings and Band – Armstrong students will have the opportunity to sign up for either Strings OR Band this year! Our new strings and band teacher, Stephen Merrick, will be visiting with the Armstrongs next Monday, September 12 at 1:30 to preview the different instruments the students may choose from. This program is only offered during the school day so this means that if students choose to participate, they will be missing part of one Science class and one Social Studies class per week, as well as some homebase time every other Friday.  Unfortunately, students may only choose to sign up for Strings OR Band, but not for both. We will be sending home information about sign-ups later next week.

Science Donations – We are in need of about 40 regular sized water bottles for our science classes next week. If you drink disposable water bottles at home, we would love to take them off your hands for you J (about 16.9 fl. oz.)

Important Reminders

-          Armstrong after school dismissal/pick-up is on the playground at the newly painted map of the United States. Please make sure to sign your child out with their homebase teacher (Mrs. Smith’s homebase will be with Mrs. Lyles). If there is inclement weather, the Armstrongs will wait for pick-up in their area upstairs. We appreciate your patience and flexibility with the new dismissal procedures.

-          Cell phones are not allowed in the Armstrong Area. While we understand the need for your child to have a cell phone with them for contact with after school activities, we require all cell phones to be checked in with Mrs. Jennings in the mornings before class. She will keep them safe during the day so they will not become a distraction. Please remind your child(ren) of this policy if they carry a cell phone to school with them. Thank you for your cooperation!

-          If you have not turned in your Mayo Way form to the office, please do that ASAP
