Edison Update 9-8-2016

Good afternoon!

We are getting excited for the Dog Wash that will be happening next Friday, September 16th!  This will be our kick off for our curriculum component, Partners with Paws.  We sent home a couple of flyers with each Edison to share with a family member or neighbor who might want to bring their furry friend to be washed.  I have also attached the flyer and ask that you share it on social media if you are so inclined.

Tomorrow morning we will be walking around the Mayo neighborhood putting flyers on houses.  We will be accepting donations of treats, rawhide, beds, collars, etc. for a local charity during the wash and prior to it.  We will have a box in the cafeteria for donations.  We would also welcome some extra hands on the 16th.  If you are available to help, please let us know.  Your student can wear gym shorts and a Mayo spirit shirt the day of the Dog wash.  Please send them in shoes that can get wet (no flip flops) and send an extra pair of shoes and socks for them to change into after the wash.

We are currently reading Magic Tree House’s Hour of the Olympics.  As part of this, we have been talking about some of the Greek gods and goddesses.  Your child should be able to tell you some information about Ancient Greece, the first Olympic games, and Greek gods.

In math we are focusing on place value up to the hundred thousands.  We have been practicing saying numbers up to six digits and making 10 more/less, 100 more/less, 1,000 more/less.  It would be great if you could practice these skills with your child.  Simply write down a 4, 5, or 6 digit number.  Have your child say the number aloud.  Ask them what 100 more than that number would be, etc.  We also read a book called Millions, Billions, and Trillions.  Ask them something interesting they learned from that book.

Please make note of the dates below that the Edison students will be taking the MAP Reading and MAP Math tests on the next two Monday mornings.  Please ensure your child has had a good breakfast and is at school on time.  Thank you for helping these mornings run smoothly!
