Armstrong Update 9-30-2016

Greetings Armstrong Parents!

 It finally feels like fall has arrived, which is good because Fall Break is just around the corner! We have Student-Led conferences coming up in a few weeks as well as a field study to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. There are several important pieces of information related to that as well as new calendar dates included in this email.

Strings and Band Update - While we are still trying to obtain all of the instruments needed for the band program, we will be starting band this week. Since our strings and band class switch every day we will be posting the weekly schedule for these classes in a common place in the Armstrong area as well as making sure to keep you updated through the weekly newsletter. The schedule through Friday Oct. 7th is as follows:
* Monday Oct. 3 - Strings
* Tuesday Oct. 4 - Band
* Wednesday Oct. 5 - Strings
* Thursday Oct. 6 - Band
* Friday Oct. 7 - NO SCHOOL (Teacher Professional Day)
* Monday Oct. 10 - Strings
* Tuesday Oct. 11 - Band
* Wednesday Oct. 12 - Strings
* Thursday Oct. 13 - Band
* Friday Oct. 14 - Strings

Crystal Bridges Field Study - The Armstrongs will be going to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas on Monday October 24th. We realize that this is the Monday after Fall Break, but we thought it would be a great way to kick start the second quarter! We will be doing the guided tour "Perseverance" from 10AM-11AM. Since Bentonville is approximately 2 hours by bus from Tulsa, is it imperative that we leave Mayo no later than 8AM. There will be more details about arrival closer to the day of the field study. This is an amazing opportunity provided by the museum at no cost to Mayo because of a generous scholarship program for public schools.

If you would like to attend this field study with us, you must let your child's homebase teacher or Mrs. Smith know by Wednesday October 5th.

Math Update - All Armstrong students were sent home with a letter pertaining to student login information for www.prodigygame.com. This is a math review program that allows students to practice their math skills at home as well as at school during their center rotations.
Armstrong Typing Update - There have been several times when students have been caught on youtube and other websites that are not the assigned typing practice website that they are to be using during that class time.

Science Update - In the coming two weeks we will study mold and which conditions are best suited to mold growth. As an extension of this lesson we would like to show your students that not all molds are "bad." To facilitate this we would like to have a day where students study and record their experiences sampling certain cheeses and bread. We will most likely use pumpernickel and blue cheese. If your student has a mold allergy please let Mr. Najera or Mr. Guss know so we can accommodate them.

Important Reminders
- Armstrong after school dismissal/pick-up is on the playground at the newly painted map of the United States. Please make sure to sign your child out with their homebase teacher (Mrs. Smith's homebase will be with Mrs. Lyles). If there is inclement weather, the Armstrongs will wait for pick-up in their area upstairs. We appreciate your patience and flexibility with the new dismissal procedures.

- Cell phones are not allowed in the Armstrong Area. While we understand the need for your child to have a cell phone with them for contact with after school activities, we require all cell phones to be checked in with Mrs. Jennings in the mornings before class. She will keep them safe during the day so they will not become a distraction. Please remind your child(ren) of this policy if they carry a cell phone to school with them. Thank you for your cooperation!
FIFTH GRADE:
- This Saturday is the Ticket Mania! Please tell your friends and family to come if each person got 5 people to come that would help us reach our goal towards the 5th grade trip. If you or your 5th grader is available to help there will be plenty for them to do. Just let me know.  You may come as early as 10:30 or as late as 2 pm to help.

- Please be collecting coins. The coin drive will be Thursday October 6, @ 5pm and we need $1000 for the bank to match us and $2000 for the bank to give us and extra $250. That's free money so gather all your coins. Thursday morning we will have a parent collecting jars if you are unable to make to the coin drive on Thursday evening (more details to come on Monday).

- Thoreau Demonstration will be coming to visit and talk with our 5th graders on Monday October, 10th at 8AM. This is something that will not interfere with any class time. If you would like to join us for this preview, you are more than welcome.
